Modem firmware was going to be my next suggestion... Already advised ^^^ :)

How are you connected, do you have to 'sign in' to access the internet? Like an email and password?

Im supposed to be automatically connected with no sign in.I have a old westell 6100 i might try..this one is the newer version and I noticed it has a bit more issues related to it.
For now I guess I'll try calling Verizon (that should be tons of fun)
Thanks everyone for helping :)

They are sending a new modem so we shall see what happens with that.

Oh No!
What if you type at the command prompt..
c: ipconfig /release
c: ipconfig /renew
If this works, we might be able to set up a batch file/icon instead of shutting down the pc. This is not a good solution, but it's better than restarting.
Lemme know if it works...

Thanks I'll have to try that.
I've come to the conclusion it's just Vista messing up somewhere with the TCP.The first time it went to local with this modem,I diagnosed and repaired (right click) And it said that vista needed to set up some kind of automatic TCP I believe. It worked that way just once. Now it's back to "vista can't find a issue with your connection"If i would to right click the icon.

Here is your batch file to renew your ip address. Just click and go :)

Constant local connection issues

Im running Vista home basic 32bit
I'm connected to DSL through a westell 6100 wired modem via Ethernet port.
After about 3 months of owning this computer I started having problems with my internet connection.Randomly my connection would switch to "local" and my browsers would fail to connect to the web but a application like AIM would still connect.I tried disabling my connection then re enabling it,refreshed ip,flushed tcp etc etc.I reset my modem turned off ip6.And after many calls to my internet provider I ended up getting a new modem sent to me and I formatted and reinstalled Vista and nothing has worked.

Basically I have to do a full restart to correct the local only issue only for it to happen again and again.
I ipconfig/all today and i noticed it said "media disconnected" I'm not sure if this could be the problem? I have seen many people having the local connection problem with wireless but I'm wired.
Here's the ipconfig/all log.
Anyone have any ideas to what the issue is?

Guys I'm no expert but I had identical problem. Firefox works fine then randomly stops altho it is still running in Task mgr. Cant close the process down from there and have to reboot. Problem got worse over a couple of weeks and was happening every time - also happened with IE 8 and Opera, nad in thelast few days if one went down the others were locked up too. I use Zone Alarm - have done for years with XP without a hitch. I couldn't find anything anywhere online that helped - but I eventually found a suggestion that I change to another Firewall. I switched to PC Tools Firewall and (for the last two days at least) not a problem. Both Firefox and IE seem to be working perfect. Hope that helps - cos I know how frustrated I was getting. If it doesn't work at least it shouldnt cause any more problems, and even a non techie like me can try this. Good luck.
