Local access only, please help!

your security software(firewall) is blocking your internet connection. Uninstall your antivirus or firewall. Your internet will start working. Then reinstall the AV. :)

ooohh.... that's it? ok let me try it... w8 :)

WOOOOOOW! Thanx Dinesh, it works! I never thought that it's my AVs fault. It's weird though, because I never did anything in my antivirus. I only updated my NVIDIA NFORCE CONTROLLER, then suddenly my ESET NOD32 smart security blocked my internet connection.

How was that possible? :)

Hi jehlau, i m glad that its working for you. Antivirus updates can cause such issues. :p. Even i use Eset Smart Security Business Edition and sometimes it blocks my Internet Connection.

Hi,

I'm trying to solve the same problem (I think!) on my brothers computer, over the phone, having never used Vista - so all in all a great laugh, not!!!

He also has eset installed but I asked him to disable that yesterday - he did, no change. The network connection says "local only" but also says "unknown network" rather than the network name, which it used to fine. This was an overnight change, one minute it worked, following morning it didn't. I've talked him through system restore as we know it did a large windows update, thought it might be that, but to no avail.

Run out of options! My biggest problem is not knowing vista I'm guessing when asking him to look for things - can anyone point me to a "map" of vista network, or give a complete idiot guide? I can just about cope with xp so this is really painful!

I also tried to disable ESET, but it seems not working. Try to uninstall it then restart your PC. (If you only disable ESET, your problem will not be solved) :D Also try to boot on safe mode with networking on and see if you can access the internet. :)

many thanks. I've asked him to try both those things, so fingers crossed!

Ok, please tell us if it works. :D

Once you're on Safe Mode with networking, open cmd.exe and type ping <your default gateway>. See if it's able to send and receive packets.

:D

Well starting in safe mode with networking yielded an instant connection :)

Now we have that sorted we'll try un-installing eset and try again, if that works we'll have to decide on new antivirus again!! I'll be back with updates later...

That's a good news. :) Kindly post what happens here and let's see if it works. :)

If it works, I can conclude that ESET's 20090623 Virus Definition Update is the main cause of this problem. 2 of my friends also in the Philippines got the same problem and we all have ESET NOD32 Smart Security, so I guess, I you're ESET is the cause of this problem, this is all ESET's fault and we should inform them at once about this update so that others will not encounter the same dilemma. :)

well it worked!

Strangely enough, last night a message appeared on eset website stating there were problems with it operating with the latest Vista upgrades, and that people need to download the update for it to work. Of course unless people delete eset they're not going to be able to get on the net to read that ;)
