Major chkdsk Problems, C:\ program files is corrupted or unreadable. Please help!

First i'd like to say this is my first visit to this forum, so Im not certain if this is the right place to make my thread by i'll go ahead anyways.

I turned my PC off last night and everything was fine.
This morning I logged on and my suspicion that something was afoot was sparked by the fact that icons on my desktop no longer had their proper icons.
I went to program files and the error message I got was:

C:\ Program Files is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.

I get a notification in the bottom corner of my screem telling me to run Chkdsk utility.
So I do a bit of research into it and try various methods of running the utility i.e command prompt and the more obvious Properties(of C:\)>tools>check for errors.

I realised while trying this that Admin privileges were not working correctly even though it states that I am infact admin of my PC.

In command prompt when I attempted to type in:
chkdsk /c (I believe this is the right command or something similar)
It came back with the error message:
Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode.

I looked into this "elevated mode" and another forum stated you must attempt to run the cmd. in administrator mode by right clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
I attempted this and I get:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Please ive looked into everything, im not the best with PC's and this is really starting to look bad.

Do you get any Blue Screen Of Deaths? If so could you please upload the Dump Files

Nope, no Blue screens of death, it appears only files with C:\ program files are affected yet the rest of my files on my PC are fine, such as Mozilla Firefox and a couple of others.

I did at one point suspect a virus, though im not sure a virus is capable of this sort of damage?

Just to check as well can you access Task Manager?

I can infact access task manager, although there is a pop up in the bottom corner of the screen when I open it saying:
taskmgr.exe - corrupt file
"The file or directory C:\Program Files is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"

But yes I can still open it

Okay now do you have a vista installation disk because you may need to use it if not have you got a recovery disk so you can repair some startup items

Yep I have the disk with me now

Ok boot from the disk and enter your language then click on Repair your computer and then click startup Repair

Did the BIOS say this?

Did you insert the Vista disc, and shut down the computer and then try to boot from it?

Or did you just insert the Vista disc whilst the computer was on and try to open it?

pcguy49, did the solution given work? My computer is experiencing the same problem, and i just wanted to know if this was the way to fix it.
