major side by side and windows errors

Hi Guys

Our Vista windows (which has never had any issues before) starting going crazy a few days ago (I believe it happened after a Windows automatic update one night). I have seen a few relevant posts on here regarding similar problems but none I have found are the same as ours. At this stage the things that stopped working are:

Itunes (Itunes was not installed correctly. Please Reinstall, Error 7 Windows Error 14001)
Microsoft Office, All Applications (This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.)
AVG Virus Scan (would not load at all and reinstalling did not set)
Adobe Acrobat and all email attachments will not load through Internet Explorer or Opera.
Quicktime (Side by Side Configuartion is incorrect. Please see App event log for more details)
Windows Messenger (Side by Side error also)

Event Viewer when opened says "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in may not have been installed correctly. Name: event viewer CLSID: FX:{etc)

I would try reinstalling Vista but the CD is in a different country still in a box waiting to be shipped so not really an option for now and all of our Wedding plans (6 weeks away) are on this computer so we cant afford to lose anything (not that we can load anything without Office)

I have tried the SFC/Scannow and it discovered errors but could not fix. I have tried updating Vista through the Windows update tool but it gets to update 3 on restart and then reverses all the updates saying they could not be updated and reverting changes.

By the looks of it from other forums it has to do with either the Visual C++ program (no idea about how that works) or it was a Windows Update issue that was corrupt, but how do I re-update when it reverts all updates back to now.

Thanks a lot for your help!!

Regards

Daniel

Do you have a System Restore Point that predates the problems?

Thanks for the reply. There are a few system restore points but it only lists them from yesterday and today. I think the problem occured around 5 days ago.
