Memory Issue with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1

There is a series of articles by Ed Bott, blogger extraordinaire for ZDNet, regarding on how to speed up Vista *the right way* - and one of those is along the lines of "Don't F*** with the Services!"

Seriously, there are *very* very *VERY* few services in Vista that you will not need - don't want to use Tablet-PC Service, Say goodbye to the Snipping Tool. Don't like how WDDM eats up RAM? Say goodbye to Aero. etc.

If you have 2 GB of RAM installed, and you save 40 MB, guess what? You've just saved a *whopping* 2% of your RAM. 2. Whole. %.

*Please* tell me that that 2% was *critical* to your system. Please.

I need a really good laugh right about now.

Hi John

Yep...I cringe when I read about users who say they've "Tweaked" their system by using BlackViper's services tweaks. Then I have to ask them "just why do you think you're in here with all these weird problems right now??" kinda deal.
Goes hand-in-hand as far as I've ever seen, follow those services tweaks...get problems.

That's when a few of us top level guys at my main site put together a fairly comprehensive test to see exactly what you save and what you lose when you follow those tweaks. First thing we found is that all those 100's of sites with Services tweaks lists pretty much were all copies of one another, pretty much verbatim.
Next thing we found after over 3 months of testing on 12 different setups....you don't gain SH*TE!! You waste more time reading these sites and applying the tweaks than you'll ever save in speed ups in any area, and the absolute Maximum amount of RAM saved was 36.4MB. And that was heavily tweaked, almost to the point of being hobbled really.

AFAIC, there isn't a single good thing that will come from tweaking/disabling your services...not ONE.No measurable time saved on bootups and shutdowns, no measurable amount of system responsiveness gains, fairly poor amount of resources saved, and a myriad of little nagging issues like Camera's not recognized when d'loading pix, thumb drives not working some times, networking issues...and the list grows on..etc.

@Jeet/jkay

I've found that AVG 8 and Avast both stand up to each other on pretty equal footing. As long as you setup AVG right and specify what you want scanned, and how you want AVG to "fix" whatever it finds, you shouldn't run into any issues.

I use "shady" software from time to time, yet I've never had AVG remove a file to the extent that I couldn't recover it or simply tell AVG to ignore it at the end of the scan.

Bottom line, don't go uninstalling AVG for anything else at this point, try Hijackthis to see if you have any naughty programs!

I've done some programming in Visual Basic as well, AVG never detects any of my programs as harmful.

Even so, just tell AVG to ignore the programs and it's fine.

Let's not turn this into a Software debate please. Both Anti-Virus' are great, as is Nod32, just don't go uninstalling one for another.

...but if you do use NoCD hacks and Keygens then theres a very good chance they are infected....it's a no brainer imo.

I'll be keeping my current AVG8 setup for the time being, until my 2 year subscription runs out at least :-) lol

I'm very happy with AVG8 so far, and yes It's detected viruses in noCD 'Cracks' and I was happy it did, my friend who uses Kaspersky used the same files without Kaspersky noticing anything until he ran a full system scan which showed he'd picked up some viruses...hmm, funny that ;-)

I tried to tell him not to use the files as AVG8 showed them as virused up, but he doesn't. or at least didn't, rate AVG8 for exactly this reason he's read on the net. Now he runs AVG8 and is much more selective of the noCD 'Cracks' he uses.

In my opinion, if an antivirus tells me that a file is infected then at least a little investigation/common sense must be used. If it's a file from an un-trusted source, i.e, not made by me, then I scan it thouroughly and/or try to obtain it from a different source before running it. If the scan shows that it's a virus or Trojan I delete it, if it shows as a hack tool, I try to find the context and then decide what to do with it.

An Antivirus tool is only as good as the user deciding how to use it. I know people who accept/ignore everything, often to hilarious results (for me anyways) ;-) lol

I'm often re-installing OS's for people who seem to be unable to take even basic advice and learn from mistakes/bad practices.
