Re: Missing space in drice C

Hi SWAT,

Yes that's part of the problem - but that is the D partition. He is rapidly losing space from the C partition.

I suspect there is a Dell Backup program making copies of everything and gobbling up the space.

Anyone out there got a Dell laptop and can explain to him simply how to turn it off and reclaim the space ?

Hello all.

I have a very basic question, is it not true that if you have more than three partitions
the fourth HAS to be an extended partition?

This is mine ... then have a look at his.

Re: Missing space in drice C

Hi Ted,

An hdd can have a max of 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions and one extended partition.

Logical drives can be created inside an extended partition.

The max. number of logical drives + primary partitions is 32 per hdd. So you can have up to 32 different "volumes " per hdd.

Try shrinking your logical drive and creating some more small volumes, also try with your extended partition , and see what Vista allows you to do.

This is the max number allowed by Windows - other o/s may be different.

Re: Missing space in drice C

I have been told that the Virtual Store folder is basically a back up of my computer. I think its Virtual storage so that would explain why there is so much there. But, I have emptied this folder before only not the whole thing because I get a message saying I can't delete certain folders. I would do it again but I dont think thats the problem. Since I have deleted it before and no new files have been added except for updates (do I really need those).

Hi Fapos,

I suspect there might be a Dell Backup program making copies of everything and gobbling up the space. Can you find anything like this on your machine?

Did find the WAU files ? - it really is important to have an installation disc, hopefully you can make one.

Alternatively , you can get a 64bit installation disc free ($10 for postage ).
Check Dell website to see if your laptop is 64bit compatible ( it probably is ).

If it is, go to this link , scroll to the bottom, enter your country, your Vista product key, fill in your name and address, pay the $10 on your credit card and they'll send it to you

Compare editions: 64-bit editions of Windows Vista

If you don't know your product key, here's how to get it

Re: Missing space in drice C

thanks alot! Just wondering, though, what is that going to do?

Sorry, I just realized you posted a link about 64 bit windows. I read it but right away i noticed it said for computers running with 4gm of memory, I only have 2, will that make a difference?
Reading makes a big difference... How can you tell if your system will support 64 bit windows?

Re: Missing space in drice C

Hi Fapos,

You need an installation disc to either repair or reinstall Vista properly. You can "clean " reinstall in about 25 minutes, and have it like a completely new machine , without all that junk the manufacturer put on there.

You will also have all the space on the disc available. Many of us do
this every year or so to get everything clean and new again - therefore running better.

It is very easy to do - but you must get a disc - I would never consider not having one.

Re: Missing space in drice C

Hi,

Think you may have misread that - the maximum RAM you can use on 32bit is 4gb - if you have 64bit you can use more RAM if you like - I am using 2gb 667mhz on my 64bit Vista.

The first thing you can try is the microsoft upgrade advisor this might give you the info you need

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

If not, you need to know exactly what version of the E1505 you have -there seems to be more than one, see this review PC World - Dell Inspiron E1505 Review

You can also check for the manual and other info. on the Dell website
Documentation

and
Documentation

Also , did it come with any cd's ? (it used to have one when they were using XP )

The Drivers and Utilities CD contains drivers that were installed during assembly of the computer. Use the Drivers and Utilities CD to load any required drivers. Depending on the region from where you ordered your computer, or whether you requested the CDs, the Drivers and Utilities CD and Operating System CD may not ship with your computer.
