My DVD burner won`t read blank Verbatim DVDs

Have you by any chance got Nero installed? If so is InCD installed? If so that could be the cause as InCD should never be installed in Vista or Windows 7 as it is incompatible with the OS's own CD/DVD handling keys.

I do have Nero 7 installed. How do I check if InCD is installed? Is it a Nero application?
I am looking now in my Nero file, at the Start Menu, & I can`t see anything with that name.
I installed an update over a year ago, as well: Nero 7.11.10.0 all update

In your Start/All Programs menu there should be an entry for Nero Control Center - call that up and it should be shown as (hopefully) not installed in that.

Yeah, I did that, & it took me to the screen where Nero`s program gives me the choice to burn a Data cd/Dvd.
As well, in the start menu, I type Nero incd, & it is there. So, it seems like it is installed.
How is that I never had a problem with this for a whole year? Is there anyway I can make it compatible with Vista or should I just get rid of Nero all together?

This is a screenshot of what appears:

It's been awhile since I used Nero Essentials.

Is Nero Startsmart listed in your Start/All programs when you expand the Nero section?

I have Nero 9 so it's difficult to remember navigating Nero 7 but if you could call that up it should list by name all the programs included.

Yeah, when I expand the Nero section, I get:
Nero online upgrade
Nero product Setup
Nero Startsmart essentials
-Audio
-Data
-Labels
-Manuals
-Photo & Video
-Play
-Tools

Do you prefer a screencap that shows what`s inside the folders as well, or is that alright?

It doesn't list components by name? For example nero express, nero burning rom etc.

InCD isn't installed so that theory is out.

Ok. So, it seems like there`re two less possible reasons.
I was wondering wether the Cd lens & the Dvd lens are the same. What I mean is, because it reads bland Cds without problems, but not Dvds. does that mean that it`s definitely not that my lenses need a good clean?

I think they only use 1 lens.. Blu-Ray burners use 2.

It's possible that the burner is simply broken and should be replaced. Do you know anyone who could perhaps lend you one of theirs to try, just to see if Vista sees it?

Do you mean the whole CDDVD drive? I don`t know anybody that has a separate burner, if I get you right. I`ve got a laptop myself.
If Vista recognizes another burner, then that would mean that my burner is broken, right?

I meant to try swapping out the drive with another one. Or I suppose you could try connecting an external DVD burner. If Vista recognizes it then the installed one has to be broken.
