I cannot, in good conscious, assist you in choosing the clearly inferior product. Do some reading and have a look at pricing; then, after you've found that the Intel products are not only superior, but cheaper, we'll revisit the topic.

OP....Fumz is right the only reason you would want an AMD at this point would be to replace & existing chip without replacing the mobo....


my bottom of the pile E2180 OCed @ 3.2ghz will out perform most of they're top end B.E. chips

I had a Dual Core AMD before my current rig, it was a Dual core 5400+ 2.8 GHz. then I got the Intel Q6700 Quad Core at 2.67 GHz, my family was like, what. you bought a slower one than the first one.. lol I just laughed and said no.

I know it's a Quad vs. a Dual Core, but even this Quad at 2.66 GHz seems to run much better, faster, and smoother than the Dual core 2.8 I had from AMD.

They are ok, but unless you can get discounts, or are adding to a previous machine. there's not really any Logical reasons to go with AMD for a new build at the moment. they are simply Ahead of the game. They already have 45nm CPU's out. and are very soon moving to the 32nm Proc Fab Chips. AMD is Planning to release there 45nm chips sometime soon, but haven't yet. Intel is a full release ahead of them in terms of Technology. and thats just the beginning.

I loved AMD. My way-back machine is on the fritz at the moment, so I can't give you an exact date, but the last Intel I owned before this one was a 500MHz Katamai. From then till now, it's been all AMD... and dey been berry berry good to me. So I understand wanting to stick with AMD as they're a sentimental favorite, but don't let sentiments cloud your judgement: buy an AMD when an AMD deserves to be bought. Today, they don't deserve it, which is unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Right before I got this E8400 I was running an Opteron 185@ 3.1GHz. I just "knew" my rig was tight and just "knew" it could keep up with anything Intel had... despite what all the benchmarks were saying. That's what we call, "denial".

The E8400 was an eye opener. Seriously, going from the 185 to the E8400 made it seem like someone had snuck into my machine and replaced my GTS with an Ultra (i still suspect gunther). The power it has over the Opteron was and is readily apparent. All of a sudden I was able to run with more AA, more AF and more eye candy, all the while still getting much better fps than with the Opty. It's so fast that, even at stock, it maxes out my 8800. That's serious cpu strength. What I like the best is that it has increased my minimum fps, noticeably, which to me is always more important than maximum fps.

Granted, I have the older G80 8800GTS, but give my card a break, it's 2 years old and ready for retirement. :D It's lived a long and productive life, asking more of it now would seem cruel and masochistic.

Hey guys, djee, this thread is like sooo old. I was really stupid compared to now back then...(notthat I'm so smart now...) I'm not going to upgrade to a new CPU (and RAM...) and mobo for a while, first PSU and then GPU... I like the discussion AMD vs. Intel tho :D (I'm intel by now btw, built two rigs with them and I really like them, so why change try and convince me:D)

Just stay on the Straight and Narrow until Intels strays from it. Or AMD Makes something worthy of it.. Meh... right.

oh and Fumz, I'll go ahead and tell you this. I actually snuck in there and did more than switched your GFX card, oh and I didn't give you something better. I gave you a wonderful Downgrade, and OC'd it so you thought it was amazing. when really you got screweded....lol

ok, ok. I put the case from a 8800 ULTRA over a G80 8800GT, not GTS. the 256mb GT. then overclocked it, and as for you being able to use AA, and AF. I simply turned those "On" in the Nvidia Control Panel, along with disabling Quality, and moving the bar to performance.. then I changed a few little parts that weren't working in your brain. and added a little chip/tweak of my own to make you think your system was faster.

See, Aren't I just a nice guy. I swear I didn't mess with any of your stuff. I've never... EVER opened your case. No sir, not me.

Don't you like have a lock for the side panel.?? You should. I do. so no ballista, your not getting my 260. Unless you have the Key

lol, I love this thing too, been using if for years, but it only really looks right on forums where the backdrop is white. I've got several dozen of these; however, I can't display most of them here. Doing so would most likely get me banned. You can get away with a lot more on private sites only 30 guys read than you can on massive public sites.

I've given up on AMD. Got my 2nd 8800GTS 512 in SLI, to find my Athlon x2 5200+ bottlenecks my PC more than I thought it would.

After looking around at Phenoms (As there aren't any Athlon x2s that can handly any gfx card from the 8 series upwards), I've decided to buy a Core 2 E8400 w/ 750 or 780i motherboard. It does actually come out cheaper than buying a top end Phenom x4 with a 780a motherboard (and the E8400 still peforms faster).

I would consider looking into an Intel chipset rather than an nVidia. The P35's are mature, very stable and great overclockers. You can hardly go wrong with the tried and true.

Well I was looking around at motherboards before, and as I've never followed Intel chipsets or CPU's, I was only really looking at nforce, and I actually thought the P-XX chipsets were for Crossfire (as nforce is for SLI).

But thanks for clearing that up, back to searching around for motherboards

The 750i FTW was what I was looking at. It looks better than the ASUS 750 as the PCI-E slots are really close together (so close that the cooler on a dual slot card will be touching the 2nd card)

If you have a PCIe-1x card and a double slot video card, your PCIe-1x device is going to be SOL on the 780i FTW - I have mine plugged into the middle PCIe 16x slot as I only have a single Video card right now.

I'd have a problem with 780i FTW as my wireless card is PCI-E x1. I've mainly been using ASUS boards. I think I was right around Intel chipsets only supporting Crossfire as Nvidia haven't let 3rd party chips support SLI, so I'll need to go nforce.

A friend recommened XFX's 680i at £65, but everything I've heard about 680i has been bad, so it'll most likely be 750 or 780.

Being older products, there is not as much support for them, and especially running Vista. My 780i (not FTW, unfortunately) is a charm, good mid range board.

Unless you plan on running the 3 way SLI, 780i is not a bad choice - the outer PCIe-16x slots are 1 and 2 the middle one is 3 - so you can run SLI with 2 cards and sill use the middle slot as a PCIe1x slot and you'd be fine.

But it costs more, so if the 750 suits you go for it.
