(Im sure I have plenty of memory since this computer is less then 3 months old)

I have Norton Anti-Virus (but expired), Spyware Doctore , and thats pretty much it.
I have downloaded uTorrent (I'v forgotten which version) , and checked marked a box asking me if I wanted to open ALL programs with uTorrent, right after that, all myprograms on my desktop (except for the Recycling Bin and Internet Explorer) turned to a white blank sheet. When uninstalling uTorrent, I forgot to uncheck the box and now everytime I want to open a program, a window pops up asking me to choose a program to open it with... I'd like to start System Restore but when clicking on it, it asks the same thing, choose the program I want to open it with... I have tried troubleshooting System Restore with <RUN> when typing in compmgmt.msc .When expanding SERVICES, I DID NOT find System Restore Services...When trying to open CMD with <RUN> , an error messege pops up saying that the file cannot be found... I'v tried troubleshooting System Restore using Command Promt, but even there, and error message pops up stating that the file may have been moved or corrupted... Please help me with this issue Im having, I feel like Iv ran out of options. If I need to show anymore information about my computer to help with whover can help me with this issue, please write me step-by-step instructions on how to get there since Im not really good around computers . Thanks.

You're using a P2P software without an antivirus? What the hell?

Secondly, you don't need to do a restore...you just need to go into your file associations and change what files are associated with uTorrent. I know there is a way to do it outside of right clicking on every file and choosing a new "Open With..", but I cannot seem to locate it at the moment. I am sure Brink knows a way to do it with every while that I don't because his brain runs on Vista Ultimate 64. :P

Hello PoBox99

I'll help you as much as I can.

Go into Control Panel (classis view) > Default Programs and see if you can set
something else to open Programs for you.
Then you can go to the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Restore if you need to do a restore.
You can also get to System Restore by typing System in the Start/Search line in
the Start Menu

First you need to get rid of Norton. Use this tool at the link below.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Then go to this link and download an antivirus program.

Avast is a good start.

Maybe by then someone else with more insight will be along to be of more assistance!

I hope you can get it straightened out!
I wish I could be more help!

Later  Ted

Thanks Brink for the link, and it gave me a new insight on my problem...

So now I know I have a broken EXE association, so I looked into it and found this...

Vista Fix
Yes, the same problem appears to happen under Vista as well as prior versions of Windows. The method described here should work but you have to do a bit more work as there is presently no .REG file download FILExt has created. When sufficient numbers of people have tested this there will be a more formal writeup with a download.

If the Vista EXE association is damaged the location in the registry most likely changed is in this key...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]

The "OpenWithList" and "UserChoice" subkeys probably have some program listed as opening the .EXE file extension. These need to be cleared and, when cleared, the system will go back to the default and the EXE extension should then work again.

You can do this by creating a .REG file with these lines in it...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithList]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithProgids]
"exefile"=hex(0):

Use cut/paste to copy these five lines to an editor like Notepad and then save the file with a .REG file extension. Copy the file to the misbehaving Vista machine and double click on it (or right click and select Merge). You will likely have to say OK to a number of different things (the user access control and the registry editor for certain) but afterward (and a restart to be certain) the system EXE association should come back.

I tried doing it but when I wanted to save it, I didnt have the choice of saving it whith a .REG file extention, I would of only been able to save it under a .txt file. Am I doing something wrong here? Please help!

PoBox99,

Your doing everything right. From Notepad, it must be saved as a TXT file first, then you right click on the TXT file to Rename it and change the file extension to REG instead. You can see how here if needed.

You should make a tutorial on this in the Tutorial section if it all works out.
