ok, a new question. My CPU fan is running wide open, full speed at all times. This makes for a noisy PC. any ideas why?

One of two things.

First its really running hot.--get everest (or cpu-z) to check system temps

second 64 bit sometimes has a problem with certain power configurations. If the temps are OK, then you can change the power profile to make the fan cycle differently

This happens immediately when powering on, so its not from running hot. It doesnt have time to get hot.

I decided to install XP on this system, its a second PC mostly for my 7 year old daughter to use and play games on, so i didnt bother installing vista 64 bit.

is there any power profile settings in XP 32 bit?

ASUS M3A78-EM: Fan Control - You should have a "Q Speed Fan" control in the bios but it won't work unless you use a cpu fan with a 4 pin connector.

Oops, older system. I was picking up mobo from system specs. What is mobo?

Yeah, the M3A78-EM works great, no problems with that one.

the P5N-MX is intel based, do they use fan speed control like the AMD based M3A78-EM?

you would think the default setting for this would be On, not off.

Ill try that on next re-boot. Thanks. still downloading XP service pack 3.

The dual core cpu fan was much quieter and slower running though, when it was working at the shop

why do u say you need a HD for it to post? I dont belive this to be correct. Am I wrong?

You don't need one to post, but if it is looking good you'll have a HD in so you can start Windows installations, and then finish installing the video card drivers and stuff and make sure it is working all the way through.

I decided my CPU may have been shot and ordered a pentium dual core E5200. I installed the new chip in the new motherboard, still nothing. I tried the new chip in my old motherboard, nothing.

Is this an exact match to your old CPU? Maybe your board needs a BIOS Update to register that model CPU. Go to ASUS website and see if the bios required an update. The BIOS on your MoBo should be on the Mobo somewhere unless you have already updated it before. Also make sure the BIOS reset pin is set to NORMAL not to reset.
Another thing you might check is if anything is being grounded.
Have you tried connecting a different monitor or a different cable? If you MoBo has different outputs try going analog (blue) or DVI (white) to the monitor.

THese are just ideas, I don't know what the actual outcome would be if one of the things mentioned above were true. Sorry if I repeated anything 8 pages is a lot to skim over.

No, the CPU wasnt an exact match, but was compatible. Your BIOS match idea was a good one, as I did find out that it wasnt compatible according to ASUS webpage, however where do you say the BIOS version is at on the board? The only way i know to tell what version is when POSting.

I tried all the different monitors cables, etc...

I guess you skipped some replys in this thread, but the PC repair shop told me that both of my 2 new CPU's were defective, and somehow my original CPU starting working in a new main board, so i went with it.

Now for the kicker, it quit POSTing again. it worked fine for 2 days, and now, after all that, is doing the same thing.

it happens when trying to come out of standby. You just dont get anything on the monitor, reboot and still get nothing

I must have an intermittently functioning CPU, or a CPU that is burning out main borads. soemthign definatly very strange going on here.
