Solved No Audio Output Device Installed and Red X

thanks again Lottiemansion... Went to download sp37324.exe again and went to BIOS and enabled the sound. After rebooting still no show no sound under device manager. So I went ahead rebooted anyway and went to BIOS and put sound on "Auto" then executed the downloaded driver file which completed properly but after reboot -- still back to 0.
"No audio output device is installed and Red X on speaker icon." Jeez?!

thanks edwoodt... where exactly do you open the "sound properties" please see photo below as this is where my sound properties are located?!

ok i hope i'm not confusing anybody, maybe this is not the same problem but here is a link to a video on youtube which should correct the sound card "recording" problem on your computer. my last thread discusses what this guy does at the "10 second mark" in his video. you might have to pause his video and advance it manually to follow because he goes very fast. but at the 10 second mark, he right clicks the "white" area of the soound properties window. this will give you options to display "SHOW DISABLED DEVICES" and after that your sound card problems should be finished. good luck
ps there should be a screen shot of the sound properties window included here

oops i forgot to add the youtube link :o)

Thanks for the help edwoodt/derekimo - as you can see below, my problem is that I don't even have any devices on the said properties whatsoever.
Although, come to think of it this Monitor (HP w17e) that I'm using has a build in speakers that should be able to broadcast any sound at all if the stand alone speakers can't pick up any. Both speakers are working just fine - Ipod works with it. Please help me! What is next to do? Can you do a restore without any CD disc? Or can I do a restore using this CD called "Home Computer Restore CD @2007 Windows Home Server 120-Day Evaluation?" This is the only CD I could find from my brother's shelf? What about the Vista? Please help me :(

The reason I know this works is after a Microsoft driver update (Silly me) I did a full recovery & my sound was still off (Red X). So I did the Bios thing & for me it started working again. Thank goodness.

As I stated above: -

I completed a recovery to manufacturers day one but the sound was still off (Red x). The only way I got it working was to reactive the sound in the bios.

Other than a recovery (F11 at the time of booting) you have tried what I did & your system is still in fault.

So, I guess you can keep all your system, files as is & obtain a USB sound device or you could try the recovery & then see if the bios bit works.

Other than that, I am not sure what else to suggest to re-activate you sound or get sound on your system. Sorry.

Thanks again... Tried another BIOS run to no avail. Question: What do you mean by obtaining a USB sound device? Also, do you need some sort of CD in order to do a recovery? Thanks again in advance for your prompt reply.

I have been looking at this on other forums and quite a few people did a bios update to get it to work. Did running a driver update from Realtek do anything?
I always go with this one.

Hi,

Look here for creating the recovery disks: -

Creating the Recovery Disc Set in Windows Vista HP Pavilion a6110n Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (Canada - English)

If you have created the disks once & lost the option to create them? Do this: -
In windows explorer goto Folder Options by Pressing Tools(Menu) - > Folder Options

then Click to View Tab.

AT Hidden files and folder select show all files and below that also uncheck Hide Protected Operating system files.

Now goto 'C:\windows\SMINST' folder & D Drive and Delete the following file

HPCD.sys

Thats it. Now you can create the disk set again.

Thanks ilikefree... yes, again the HD Audio Coded Driver update/downloaded alright and then was executed properly but after restarting from the program. The result however, showed Realtek HD Audio Driver under Control Panel/Programs and Features only and the Device Manager showed NO SOUND VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLER found? Still no sound and I don't know what the system did to Realtek? It placed Realtek under programs/features but that was about it?
Where could the problem be?

Lottiemansion, thanks again for the info. regarding the USB and such. Which one do you think is the easiest solution out of the three? In the meantime, will create the Recovery Disc to get it set up for formatting the Desktop and starting from scratch and hopefully the sound will turn on... both the monitor's and stand alone speakers are ready :)

Someone here said to try turning it off and unplugging it for a couple of minutes.
Don't know if it will help, but it won't cost anything to try.

Thanks edwoodt... wow, that's why it's a pain to fix this problem perhaps... might really have to go with one of the 3 solutions from Lottiemansion?! .... Here's the thing, the system detects the Realtek program under program/features but yet somehow the Device Manager doesn't recognize the Realtek Chip in the system? From your link/picture below?! I really do not know how could this be possible? Anyway, which one do you think is the most promising to try out of the 3 from Lottiemansion? Thanks in advance...

love ur name ilikefree... Yes, did that and more, unplugged the power supply cable and hold the desktop power button for more than a minute. After that, completely turned off the power supply for everything connected so it will reset all. But nothing... Although, when I try to delete my email spam completely from the empty box... I hear this slight ping somewhere from the field of "Are you sure you want to delete all?" I really do not know if the slight ping is coming from the desktop or from the monitor itself. Just a thought?! Thanks again... ilikefree and love to hear from you again!!!

i personally would reinstall windows if i couldn't solve the problem, but i may not understand the nature of the problem. if reinstall is not a choice i'd go to a computer shop and ask them to put in a different motherboard to see what happens. how old is the puter, will hp do anything for you if it is the motherboard, or will the computershop where you bought it do anything for you. best of luck

My Computer

When you open Realtek from the control panel do you get any options.
If you have reset the BIOS and still have nothing a reinstall may not fix it.

Thank you all very much !!!

Lottiemansion - If you replace the motherboard this will entail lots of loading as far as loading software programs; such as Vista and other accessory programs that came from the factory BOX itself? Lots of steps necessary to bring the sound and the video back in order huh? But then again that will fix the sound and video problems that this PC is having at the moment, OK!!! Thanks.

edwoodt - Reinstalling doesn't give us 100% success rate as far as fixing the sound and video problems this PC is experiencing, correct? This computer was bought and installed April of 2007, so it's pretty old and I think the warranties have expired, also.

ilikefree - When I open the Control Panel and into Device Manager - I do not see any Sound, Video and Game Controller options at all. When I try to open the Control Panel and into Programs/Features the only option here is to Uninstall, see screenshot below.

So, that's it reinstalling it may not fix the problems afterall, especially with the additon of the video problems which I stated earlier when I try to open a jpeg file and it's very large the computer freezes and I have to do a hard reboot to get it going again.

OKAY guys... we have an old PC, No virus, lots of disk space, a monitor with a build in speaker and also a stand alone speaker that are working just fine. But after all these great recommendations on how to fix the problems - the problems still persists :( :( Please give your final advice/suggestions before I close this Red X Chapter. Thanks again!

Hi,

No, the system will just swap straight over no issues. All you will need to do is install the correct drivers from the previous posts.

Disconnect, remove, fit & then reconnect & your done.

Windows will still boot as if nothing has happend. Same motherboard needs same drivers, it's just working!

Thanks Lottiemansion for all your help. Now it's time to close this chapter. Ended up buying a USB Analog & Digital Audio Adapter from Turtle Beach - works awesome with the stand alone speakers! We have sound finally and NO Red X anymore on the speaker icon, too! Although, still having problems with the screen freezing but not when I ran the PC in Safe Mode. But, being in the safe mode we have the very basic components working including - no sound coming from speakers but solve that problem by following the below:

It is possible to make sound work on Safe Mode.
1.Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc, press Enter and look for your sound device. (e.g. Reatlek High Definition Audio) Double-click it.
2.Go to the tab 'Details' and click the drop-down list. Select 'Driver key' and copy the text from 'Value'
3.Copy the text into a word processor (e.g. Notepad)
4.Replace all lower-case letters with capital letters and remove the \0000.
5.Open Registry Editor (Windows + R > regedit) and locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network.
6.Create a new key (Rightclick > New > Key)
7.Copy the text from your word processor and paste it into the key name.
8.Edit the '(Default)' key and type 'Sound, video and game controllers'.
9.Create a new key called 'AudioEndpointBuilder', 'MMCSS' and 'Audiosrv'
10.Edit all their '(Default)' keys and type 'Service'.
11.Restart your computer
12.Go to Services (Windows + R > services.msc) and start Multimedia Class Scheduler and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
13.Then start Windows Audio Service

This has been tested and functioning properly on an Acer Aspire desktop.

So, that's it vacation over running PC in Safe Mode with sound and no problem freezing. Drawbacks - big fonts and some programs doesn't work like the media player but itunes work though?! Basically, this PC needs a new motherboard! Thanks again to all, happy Valentine's Day and God bless!
