noisy computer

Those links don't lead anywhere. If I where you I'd start out by cleaning the fan and heatsink with compressed air. Did you ever run prime95?

Yha, that cpu fan is just fine.

Thermal paste won't help, as its maent to cool off the cpu, but you have good temps. Most likely your fan bearings are going. Which is fairly common with the age of your system.

If your fan is going, I'd really be aprehensive about running prime, or any thing that puts a 100% load on the cpu, as you may not beable to properly cool off your cpu.

Cleaning your fan is a good start, but usually only helps with cooling, and not a noisey fan.

I've had to replace mine several time so that's nothing major however I brought that up because on my system the CPU fan has to start spinning more when it heats up due to dust getting trapped on the heatsink and not because of my fan going bad. When too must dust gets trapped and I put it on full load the fan spins faster than normal. That's what it sounds like might be going on with him which is why I suggested running prim95 too see how high it got under full load. It shouldn't hurt anything as long as he stops it and shuts down his computer if it gets too hot like I suggested.

nope, i cleaned the fan, not a speck of dust in the fan or heatsink

Well then it must be the fan. You should be able to get a replacement from a computer parts store or from newegg. An alternative would be to get a better heatsink but that's more involved.

If you can find just the fan, then sure. I'd check your local shops to see if they have one.

Else you'll need to replace the fan and heatsink. Which is fairly easy too.

I'd go and talk to a local shop before you go and buy, and see if they can cheaply help.

i bought it, and tried it, attached everything, just like my old fan was attached, but when i tried opening my pc, it said "your cpu fan doesn't work properly. you must turn off your syystem and check it, to avoid further damage..." something of similar effect, i've switched back to my old cpu fan, until further instructions, i watch the fan when i turn my pc go on, it spins for 2 seconds then stops...

You did plug in the fan correct? Into the cpu fan header?

Did you follow the included instructions? Which would have shown to put paste on the heatsink/cpu?

Have you started up the computre and watched if the new fan is spinning?

The error youre getting from the computer was put there by compaq as a warning to check the fan. The new fan might not run the same voltage as the old one.

Aslong as the fan spins and you installed correctly, you'll be fine.

start it up and go into the bios and find your temps there.

wheni turn my pc on, with the new cpu cooler, it starts spinning, then stops after 2 seconds, my screen turns active, and then goes to the page with the warning, i'm not sure about the voltage, and the i followed the instructions on how to place the paste, i did everything it said, could the reason its not working because my pc is a 940, whereas the new cooler is 939? or because my cpu fan lead only has 3 holes, whereas the lead from the new cooler has 4?

Oh, you can't continue on past it?

You could try plugging the old fan bacvk on, then run the bios that way.

You may have just pluged the 4 pin connector in the wrong 3 pins. Try fiddling with that.

like on the picture on the left, i can only place it in one way, would it be wise for me to exchange it and get a 940 one?

You dont have a 940 per say. You have the 940 model cpu, which is an am2 socket cpu.

A 939 socket is a athlon unicore chip from bout 4yrs ago, so no don't trade it.

Your fan isnt sending your board a signal to let it know you have one connected. You need tgo see if the fan actually works. You could try plugging the fan into another 3/4pin plug and see if the fan spins.

Even though the the connector has the tabs, it might not line up right still. Just double check the same colored wires are plugging in as the old one.
