would it be more expensive if the warranty's run out, or the same price? and does it come on a cd? or could i put the relevant files on a flash drive and do it that way, or do i need to run the dvd itself? because i only have a cd player .. and i've run sfc two more times and it's said the same thing, hopefully the third will be the charm but i'm not expecting much.. damn.. i only reinstalled windows a couple of months ago, it was supposed to be the last thing i ever did to it until i could afford a new computer .. .. ho hum.. thanks for your advice anyway

the hard drive isn't the one that came with the laptop, but it's an acer aspire 5630 bl50 model, and the hard drive's properties, if this isn't nonsense, says 'wdc wd800bevs-07rst0 ata device'

shame.. .. guess i'm starting over again, reinstall windows, i think for my skill level it'd be the simplest option.. i've been meaning to go back to using xp for a while, anyway.. and is there a way i can make sure norton won't install itself the next time?

Where did you get the install DVD? If you bought it as an install DVD, Norton will not be on it. If it came with the computer, from the manufacturer, the DVD will just be like the Operating System when you took the computer home.

the xp install cd i'll be using once i've finished downloading driver software didn't come with this computer, nor did the copy of vista i'm using now, but the copy they gave me when i bought this in the first place had norton in the cd .. i reinstalled somebody else's version of vista a couple of months ago, and he's given me a disc with xp on it now, and the vista install disc he gave me had norton and some other programs that i've uninstalled as i don't know what they are, and i was wondering if this was standard now, for microsoft to bundle various bits and pieces into their install discs with the operating system

Very astute question, hopefully my answer will be just as astute.
There are two ways to get install DVDs.
The first when you buy the computer, you get a DVD, to reinstall in case of problems. This DVD is just like the way your computer was the day you took it home. All the software will be included.
The second DVD is when you go out and buy, just the Operating System. You can go to Best Buy, Amazon etc and buy Windows Seven, (Vista is no longer available). If you buy just the Operating System, it is pure, none of the other stuff, such as Anti Virus will be on it. If you use DVD number one, there is not way to avoid including all of the software.
You can uninstall it however, but that seemed to be a problem for you.

i didn't get another dvd with my computer, just the operating system, i guess what should have been on that other dvd was in the hidden partition that i would have had.. .. anyway at least now i know to create restore points any time i do something, so if i find norton in here i'll do that before uninstalling so i won't have to go thru all this hassle again .. with a bit of luck it won't be there and i won't need to uninstall it at all.. they really shouldn't be giving people their software anyway, more trouble than it's worth, they should only give it to paying customers who specifically request it .. .. yea driver files have downloaded, going to reinstall windows.. thanks a lot for your help, even if it wasn't useful except as stuff to keep in mind for future reference

When you buy a new computer, the software such as Norton is included because the computer manufactuer gets rebates from the software manufacturer for including their product, which you must pay for after the trial period.

alright, i see, that makes sense


now i'm having trouble reloading windows, i've changed the boot order in bios to cd rom at the top and hard drive at the bottom, and it's still booting from the hard drive, says 'do you want to run startup repair or start windows normally?' .. does this mean that i've missed a stage, or that there's something wrong with the cd?

Try another CD
If CD is good, this just tends to indicate hardware problem.
