Ok, so just to finally finish this one off.
I installed Windows 7 today and got a dreaded blue screen. I started to wonder if this was related to these problems.
So, I disconnected the drive that I thought was causing the issue, and hey presto, Windows 7 installed, and no disk needed in the drive.
Now all I need is to reformat the disconnected disk and hopefully bring it back to life - otherwise new hard disk needed!
