Hello!

I am very sorry to being bad news. Those sorts of massive scale corruptions are going to be impossible to fix. You have corruptions in the manifests, and amazingly, many of those have been fixed. You have corruptions of an uncountable number of files. We cannot fix this. We simply cannot fix this. You have even got a corruption of the kernal, and other boot critical components, which don't slip in - slip out quite as easily as many files do.

However, before you re-install, we need you to run a Hard Drive Diagnostics test. Please refer to this website for instructions on how to do this, and don't hesitate to ask! HD Diagnostic

@Lorien & niemiro - Hello! I don't know how my system got so messed up. baffles me. I'm afraid I don't have the genuine vista installation disk. I bought my laptop - lenovo ideapad y550 - from the US, well actually my girlfriend sent it to me. It didn't come with the vista disk. Normally Lenovo sends the disc to users if they request for it, but I don't think they'll be sending me anything here in Bangladesh . In my country people don't usually buy original softwares/windows and these are not readily available as well. Everyone's got pirated copies. I could just get a pirated copy and install that but I don't want to lose the genuine vista already in my laptop.

So, I guess vista reinstallation is not really an option. Although I apparently have the vista files in my HD. Worst case scenario I might do a system restore to factory settings. Will that help? I really am trying to avoid that since I don't have backups for all my data. What if I repair vista? I downloaded the vista repair software and made a disc when i fixed the vista restart problem.

I stumbled upon this link in google and just installed this software. Says it was made to fix the 1935 error. Scanning for errors through that as we speak.

Your system files are still horribly corrupted and a re-installation or clean install or restore to factory settings is the only solution.

To repair Vista, you need the genuine Vista Installation Disk - that was our first choice and what we were hoping to do. Apparently, that isn't possible since you don't have access to a disk - so we won't bother posting those procedures. That being the case, restoring to factory settings is the only choice. The repair disk will not do the trick - it doesn't have the installation files that need to be replaced. And even if you had a manufacturer-provided recovery disk, that wouldn't work because it is not designed for system repair/upgrades but only to restore the computer to factory original conditions.

Don't bother trying to correct individual error messages (like 1935) - your system files are so corrupt that you'd really just be wasting your time as you need to re-install anyway. You may fix that particular problem (or make things worse as the corruption is so severe I'm frankly surprised you can boot or do anything on the computer at all), but the overall problem would remain. A re-installation of some sort is the only real option here. Without the disk, that means restoring to factory settings.

You can use Knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html with a good ISO copier like: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm along with a blank CD. This should give you enough access to the system (if you can't get in any other way and at the moment it seems you can so use the easier, more normal methods) to backup (or copy/paste) your important data (hopefully, you can find someplace to put it - an external HDD or a set of DVDs or something). Once done, you can do a clean install (or recovery to factory conditions) either using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk or the Recovery Disk or the Recovery Partition (this seems to be what you say you have) using whatever process is dictated by your computer manufacturer – you may need to contact them for the procedure and perhaps to get recovery disks if the recovery partition does not work. To do a clean install proceed as follows: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_install_03.asp (adapted as necessary by the procedures of your computer manufacturer). Then you will need to re-install all your programs, reset all your preferences, reconfigure your network and email settings, restore your backed up data, run Windows Update with possibly nearly 150 updates pending,...

It worked!! MS Office installed without any problems! I had almost given up after installing a lot of windows updates I thought I'd give it a last shot. Restarted the system, and it installed fine. Unbelievable. I think the updates fixed the NET Framework issues, atleast temporarily I'm guessing. But I plan to reset everything back to factory settings nevertheless as soon as I get a portable HD for backing up my data. So, hopefully I'll be back here pretty soon pestering you gentlemen again!

Thank you - it is appreciated. It was our pleasure to help. But you're living on borrowed time. Please see my last post. I recommend you hurry with that backup so you can restore the sytem (and also install Office all over again, hopefully with fewer problems - LOL) before something happens because I'm genuinely worried about that system's ability to continue to function without a very serious problem such as an inability to boot or access any files. As I said, I consider it a miracle that it works right now.

Thanks for the advice. I intend to do the restore ASAP. I have a confusion though. My laptop came with Vista SP1 and I upgraded to SP2 through windows update somewhere down the line. I think I read somewhere that Microsoft has stopped supporting Vista SP1 or something. If that is true, doesn't that imply that I wouldn't get any updates for my Vista SP1? I don't really have a clue how this thing works so it would be helpful if you could clarify the matter.

If you upgraded to SP2, you are SP2. Any reference to SP1 does not apply to you.
You are Vista SP2. Dont worry, all updates that are sent for Vista, if applicable, will be received by you.

If you re-install and it is SP1, then you are right and you won't get automatic updates from Microsoft until you are SP2 again. Manually download and install SP2 from the Microsoft Dowload site Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465) and then you can use Windows Update or Microsoft Update (which you should then do until you are fully up-to-date) and you'll be fine. Remember, some updates depend on prior updates and aren't presented until the prior ones are intalled (and usually after you then reboot). So it sometimes takes a few update checks before you have them all. Then you can switch back on Automatic Updates and it will work as before.

If using Microsoft Update, make sure you install your Microsoft Products (Office, Essentials, MSE,...) after installing Vista SP2 and the updats so the updates will include those applicable to those products as well (some may require Vista to be up-to-date before being presented) and then I'd do the same update routine as described above until they're all up-to-date as well.
