Paint Shop Pro suddenly stopped working

System is Athlon 2.2dual, 2gig RAM, Vista Home Premium 32bit. I have been running Paint Shop Pro 8.0 on this system for nearly a year with no problems until a couple of weeks ago. Then, whenever I clicked on a vector object in the layers palette I would get a series of script errors and PSP would lock up. After trying numerous "fixes", I completely removed and reinstalled PSP; it seemed to work normally again ...for a few days. Now, as soon as I click on the desktop icon I get that Vista irritant "Paint Shop Pro.exe has stopped running...", clicking "more details" gets me:

It seems MFC42.dll is the culprit here, it is part of windows - not PSP (a visual C++ file, I believe). I ran SFC and it reported no problems. This dll has the same time stamp as the other dlls in the directory. I have installed nothing in the past month which would have altered any dlls, the computer is not on any network (its only connection to the outside world is via the power lines), and I'm not having problems with any other software.

So - what now?
