Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

Alright, it says that ntkrnlmp.exe is the problem. What does that mean for me now?

Ntkrnlmp.exe is a system file. Run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt. What was the Bugcheck_Str code? The Process Name? Also update all your drivers including a BIOS update if you can. Run through google with that info but it all tends to point to the drivers.

I believe the problem I had was related to software I had added to my computer prior to doing the update. I had installed NIKON CAMERA and Photo editing software that came with my wifes camera - after reading a few posts here, I uninstalled the NIKON Software - then went back and did the Update and Have not had a problem since.

If you were doing ok with your computer prior to the crash and added new software drivers recently before you did the update, I'd put money on it being related - it might be something else, but I would bet that tthis is the problem - now, if you didn't add new software recently it could be some other driver on your computer that is not playing nice with the update but this would be way out of my league - there are others here who know a ton more about this than I do - I tried following one guys advise and downloaded a debugger - but when I started reading how to use it, my eyes glazed over and my head started hurting - I will leave that to the professionals - good luck...glad my wife is still on XP though, wish I was - I don't like vista at all! Can't wait for Windows 7 - hope it really is what everyone says it is!

It would probably be a good idea to start a new thread. Follow the guide in my sig or .zip up and post the .dmp files.

Something is interfering with the kernel. Update to SP2, and update all your drivers - video, sound and BIOS. Also have you installed any new software recently? Is this an HP Pavillion laptop?

Dell Studio Desktop....

Try updating the drivers. Have you changed any software, especially antivirus? In installed updates do you have (KB973879) installed?

Ok, just got a blue screen as i was posting and i changed my settings to display the blue screen. Would it help if I posted the stop error?

Is SP2 a recommended update? I don't see it anywhere. I have noticed my computer has gotten a lot of updates recently.

yes, KB973879 just updated yesterday....

BTW: THANKS so much for your help!!!!

My Computer

I don't know if this is related but I ALWAYS get Event ID 4321 NetBT errors that I've been trying to troubleshoot for a while now. I've changed my computer name and domain in the recent past and also deleted "ghost" NIC cards where I had tried to troubleshoot in the past.

I can't think of any new programs I've installed recently. I got rid of AVG a while ago....

It would be ewsier and faster if you went to c:\winodws\minidunp, zip'ed the dump file (*dmp) and uploaded it for s to look at.

In the interim, can you boot into safe mode? do you have a backup with which to restore? 32bit or 64?

Thanks Frostmourne. I'm sorry if this is a dumb statement, but I can't seem to find the minidump folder in windows.
I know the location is C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini082609-04.dmp, but it isn't coming up in my searches either. I'm sort of baffled

Minidump might be hidden. do you have show all files and folders checked? do a search for *.dmp and you should be able to find it

You need to zip it to upload it to us. It will let you attach a zip file

64 bit. I have a lot of system restore points but don't have a system backup....

Is that easy to put on a usb hard drive?

I have the dump file zipped. How do I upload?

Updated a lot of my drivers. The only one that updated was RealTek PCIe GBE Family Controller. A RealTek update is also recommended in Windows Update....

Sorry I'm slow. Tried to update the RealTek update I mentioned and it failed with error code 80070103. I'll keep going through and updating the rest of my drivers. Do I have to do them one by one?
