Question about a Vista computer just slower than molasses

Are you wanting me to attach again? I'm confused.

No if Miles can see them it must be something on my end giving problems
I have asked miles to list what is on your screenshot so I can give a better answer.
Basically anything not Microsoft is not needed at start up
Anything you use every day I would set the start up to Automatic
Everything else I would set start up to manual
Also check that dependencies on items you set to automatic start are also set to start automatically

Thanks for all your efforts to help me. That fix with Genie Timeline really made a difference on my laptop running Windows 7, but it didn't help much on the desktop running Vista.
Don't know what you mean by
"Also check that dependencies on items you set to automatic start are also set to start automatically."

When you go to Services.msc click on status (you may have to do it twice to get started to the top) then hold shift and press startup type to get Automatic to the top
Go to the service you want to alter and highlight it then right click and go to its properties
It will open in the general tab you need to click the dependencies tab as well to see what is needed to be running for the service to start and run correctly

There are 3 things that come up all the time when I check out Event Viewer/Administrative Events. I just wondered if anything would jump out at you:
1. The protocol handler Search.OneIndexHandler.2 cannot be loaded. Error description. Class not registered.
2. The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load.
UimBus
Uim_IM
3. The UPnP Device Host service depends on the SSDP Discovery service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
(The UPnP Device Host Service was set to disabled, so I changed it to manual. The SSDP Discovery Service was set to automatic so I just left it.)

Also, with all my monkeying around, Genie would not start and indicated that I had to start a new backup. I decided to try a System Restore before I did that. When the SR was done Genie was in good working order again, and yet I got the info box saying that the SR was not successful so I'm not sure what to do. It was successful because it fixed what I ran it for. Would it be safe for me to ignore the business about it not being successful?

All very strange. I can go to my original screenshots attached here and I can read every word of them.

If I go first to msconfig/Services and hide all Microsoft services ... then when I open services.msc, does that mean what shows there are non-Microsoft?

No the services in Services.msc are all the services including Microsoft services
By hiding the MS services in msconfig you get a list of all others but you can only disable them in msconfig for testing
To disabe or alter their start up you need to go to services.msc (just type it into start search box)

I think Vista can just get bogged down, best to do a fresh install.
I bought 3 programs of W7 for $20 each, you get the code when you pay for it.
Im tempted to buy a cheap mobo maybe the itx or whatever if it will fit my ATX case, they are $50-$100 with only 2 ram slots, but still 32GB max.

Don't do this it is not needed. "Best to do a fresh install" is bad advice for your situation.

Just disable all services not needed at startup from within services.msc. by highlighting the service, go to it's properties (or just double click it) and change startup type to manual

To find out which services you can stop hold down Windows key and press R
Type msconfig and press enter
click services
tick the box Hide All Microsoft Services
You can safely set all remaining services to manual

Hi, I also have Vista Home Premium SP2 which has been taking longer and longer to finish booting up. It's running on an Acer Aspire 5735 with Intel Core2 Duo T6400 2GHz and 4GB DDR2 RAM. The C partition has 83GB free of 228GB and the Data (D) partition 174GB free of 227GB. The anti-virus is Microsoft Security Essentials. During the boot-up there seems to be intense hard disk activity - the disk light illuminates constantly with only an occasional flicker - and until this dies down it's quite impossible to launch anything. I've tried opening Task Manager but that struggles to launch and when it does I can't see any processes taking an unusual amount of CPU time.

I've been trying to go through the steps outlined by ilikefree in his first reply and have run up against an issue using sfc. This gets to 81% then reports "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

In spite of this I have run CCleaner and have set all but one of the non-Microsoft services to 'manual' (the one remaining service, which is a security service called Trusteer Rapport, will not allow me to do this). I've also run a deep scan with MSE but nothing was found. None of this has made a significant difference to the boot-up time. It's still taking in excess of five minutes from logging in for the disk activity to decrease to the point where it actually becomes usable. I'm now starting to think I'll have to resort to the rescue disks I created when the laptop was new in order to return it to factory condition - unless anyone can suggest anything else I might try.

Incidentally apart from the frustration of waiting for the darn thing to become usable the intense disk activity also hammers the battery life so I really want to get this sorted.

I would read this and see if it can help you
[Solved] Rapport Security Software - avoid using it

Also Windows Vista makes a restore point at start up and I change this in task scheduler to 10am and 10pm and delete the start up task
Rebooting in about 70 seconds is normal for me with the settings I have set
Services in msconfig I keep running after hiding all Microsoft services are
Private Firewall, Avast, MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit
I find nothing else is needed

Hi ilikefree, thanks for the response and sorry for the delay in replying but for some reason I'm not getting email notifications even though I'm subscribed to the thread. I'll have to check my profile to make sure the address is correct. [Edit]: I'd typed one character wrong, now fixed.

Thanks for the tips. I already use Revo Uninstaller myself but the Unlocker looks handy. I'll try getting rid of Trusteer Rapport and report back. That app was offered and recommended by my bank when I started online banking so felt I had to install it.

Before I get rid of it, though, I'll try your tip regarding the restore point generation as that seems to me a likely culprit responsible for the excessive disk activity.

Thanks again.

Ok, Rearranged System Restore point scheduling and completely removed Trusteer using Revo and CCleaner. Powered down and restarted a couple of times, both on battery power. The second time it's taken about 40 secs from power-on to login screen, about 2m 15s before all items were present in system tray and I was able to launch browser with very little delay, but about 4 1/2 minutes before the initial burst of disk activity ceased and as I write (on a different system) it's gone through another short burst of intense activity.

So, I would say it's probably a bit better but the improvement is not as great as I'd hoped. I'll see how it goes for a while before deciding whether to return it to factory condition. I'd obviously prefer not to do that and have to re-install everything (one thing I absolutely hate about Windows).

OK Vista has some very good programs built in to help find the cause of the disc activity.
When you have a lot of disc activity can you open task manager (Right click near the notifications icons to find it)
Click on Processes, see what is using all the memory.

In Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Reliability and Performance Monitor, Reliability Monitor
See what has red circles with white crosses. It will show past problems not real-time problems.

Have you tried starting in safe mode. Repeatedly tap F8 before Windows starts to load to access it.

If you continue to have problems we should start a thread for you as you are on another posters thread now.
