Raid 0

Hi to all. i'm new to building computers. i built my 1st one 3 months ago and i must admit, it feels good.

i'm trying a new build and i want to try RAID 0. can anyone give me detailed steps on how i may do that? i've been searching the forums and all i've seen so far are problems with drivers. there aren't really detailed step by step instructions.

the affected parts for my next build regarding RAID 0 will be:
ASUS P5Q SE2
Vista Ultimate 64bit
Intel Q9400
WD Caviar SE16 500Gb

i looked at a few websites regarding RAID 0. Some have steps on how to do it on the motherboard only without mention of installing drivers. I also saw a video of how to do it by installing the driver during installation but it did not say if it's motherboard specific or not.

can anyone help please?
or at least point me in the right direction..

thank you

Hi INEMESIS,

First of all, the basic requirements for any form of RAID array is at least 2 physical HDDs. For best results, all HDDs in an array need to be identical, preferably the same make and model number.

However, you will NOT be able to use RAID on that motherboard without purchasing an add-on card as the board does not support it. Sorry. :(

I have a HighPoint RocketRAID 2310 (PCIe x4) that's Vista compatible (but won't have drivers for Win7 that I purchased for about $120 (US) back in January. It's a great card and it scorches speed tests when coupled with W-D Velociraptors.

I just purchased a HighPoint RocketRAID 2640x4 (PCIe x4) that will be supported in Windows 7 for $145 (US).

Both are equipped to handle up to 4 SATA drives.

thanks for all the replies guys. much appreciated. any recommendations on low to medium end motherboards that has RAID capabilities already?

My Computer

With onboard RAID controllers it's kind of a crap shoot. My onboard Nvidia controller is working great, but many onboard controllers are crap. You'd do better just buying a RAID controller.
