ReBoot Time

My boot times were getting longer and longer, and then, this morning my hard drive crashed. Fortunately, I had moved all my computer club lectures and handouts for my students to my lap top (copies of anyway). It would have been a disaster otherwise.

@ Red Fox - read the thread for answers on how to decrease it.

I used a script dmex made called KillAll.vbs to kill all unnecessary apps, then performed the reboot. You can download it Below:

Vista Forums Kill All Non-Essential Applications:
download

Save it and then you can install it.

(Kudos to dmex for linking me to the script and on how to add apps to whitelist)

Hey Guys,

I updated Johngalt`s post (just above) with the new version of KillAll and uploaded it here on the forum instead of using my ftp :)

I hope you guys find it as useful as I do for killing all non-essential applications before running Games or System Analysis/benchmarking Tools ;)

I will create a dedicated Tutorial with Instructions on adding programs you want whitelisted from the kill later

I haven't altered it to do all my cores at once during start-up and it appears to be much faster than most peoples here. Is there really any point in me altering it to use all of my 4 cores?

And when you say 'click make boot changes permanent' why not apply without ticking that?

Here's my standard boot-up time:

Hi Surreal,

And when you say 'click make boot changes permanent' why not apply without ticking that?

Step 7 here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/153125-boot-advanced-options-number-processors.html

If you do not check this, then you will Selective startup dotted instead of Normal startup under the General tab. With some changes in msconfig (Ex: Startup programs), if you do not check the box to have the Normal startup dotted, you will get a message at every startup letting you know of the changes until you undo them or check the box.

That's all. ;)

I have known about this handy tip for a while now...I just never had a tool to actually measure the times. When I started I went back to a 1 processor config and tested it. I got a 280 sec reading. I then did a 2 processor config(max on this laptop) and got a 200. Thanks for the script to check the times! Well done!

Hi,

I got a reboot time of 53 seconds - thought that was pretty slow. I suppose this includes the whole reboot i.e. shutdown and startup because my startup is 38 seconds on a stopwatch. Apart from loading system services I only have Windows Defender, Avast Antivirus and my nvidia card coming in at startup - mind you Avast does a system memory check and a rootkit check during that so could probably save a few seconds by turning that off, but it's worth it for the extra security.

Hello jpranojo.

It doesn't look like you can disable much.
The way to do it is one at a time, disable one and re-boot if it causes a problem re-enable it.
Have a look at the second & third NVIDIA entries.
Also what are these "Mediafour MacDrive" are they duplicates? If so that could cause trouble.
The rest is subjective, only you can decide what you want to 'start' at boot-up.

you won't get low boot times with anything Symantec installed - they do a lot of stuff on the boot side.
