Solved Resurecting an old chkdsk problem

I am new here and found discussion of chkdsk in the newsgroups back in 2007 but did not find an answer to my problem there.

I have a USB external drive on my laptop that moves between computers. The laptop's internal drive has the OS and all programs that I use on the machine.

I wish to run chkdsk on the external drive. I tried the procedure that begins with right clicking on the drive in My Computer and got to the point of the message that chkdsk could not be run because the drive was in use. I hit the button to schedule a disc check and the window went away. I did a full shut down and powered up, expecting the dskchk to start but it didn't. The machine booted up like I had done nothing.

I then went to command mode and tried running chkdsk on the external drive and got a message that I was not authorized to run chkdsk from there. I am the first and only owner of this computer and should be registered as the administrator on it.

How do I run chkdsk on the external drive?

Sorry for bringing back this old problem but will sure appreciate any help you can give.

mmm, have you tried entering cmd before going into windows and running chkdsk from there? Or going through safe mode since this will only run services from the drive in your laptop.

Success. Boatdude's suggestion plus more searching in the tutorials where I found the procedure and I was able to run chkdsk. Thanks for all the help.
