It does not say that. Read it again, carefully.

It's telling me cannot create a recovery disc. Windows installation disc required to create discovery disc. Not sure what I am doing wrong? This is where I am at on the tutorial for creating a recovery disc..... 16. Select your DVD drive and click on create disc. 17. Insert your retail Vista installation DVD into the CD/DVD drive and click on Continue.

Ok, so 8 hours later and 6DVDs later I backed up everything using Windows backup. Does that backup my games like Diablo and the saved games files or do I have to do that seperate? Also, is it possible that if I do have a virus and I do a clean install and restore my files from the backups that I might end up reinfecting my system?

You cannot back up the software if you are going to reinstall. You must install again and you will need a product key number if applicable.
Yes, its possible that the virus is in one your your personal files or software.
Check your stuff individually with this. If it passes you are ok

https://www.virustotal.com/

You have an installation DVD right here. You just need your product key number and back up your stuff.

You make the DVD from the link above.

I don't see anything other than virus scanning on virustotal.com. Where are the instructions to burning the ISO that you are talking about?

Heres a secret about Vista. All the DVDs are the same. During the install process you are asked for you key number. Once inserted the DVD will give you what you are entitled, too. After the download you have to make all the upadates and SP2.

Ok. So now I am going to burn that from the link you gave me and that will give me the windows installation disc. Then I can use that to make the recovery disc. Then once I have both those discs I, which one do I use to boot from to do the clean install? Or am I attempting a repair install first?

Do I need to download all 3 files from that link or just the .exe file? I downloaded just the exe file and when it extracts it says "Windows Vista Setup Preperation cannot find one of its required files. Please ensure that vistasetupprep.exe, boot.wim, and install.wim were downloaded to the same folder"

I knew that the questions would come up sooner or later. I asked another memeber that I helped to post how he actually did it. Here it is

Here's what I did.

  1. Download the 3 files. (.exe, install.wim, and boot.wim???)
  2. Then I ran the x.exe file (after if the installation didn't work I went and downloaded the program called WinToFlash, by Novicorp. This program allowed me to make a bootable usb)
  3. After making the bootable usb(I can give you even greater detail for this if needed) I rebooted the computer and booted from the usb to start the windows installation.
  4. The tricky part is when your computer reboots during the installation you need to make sure your usb stick isn't insterted when it reboots because if you're like me you've changed your boot order to usb and it just restarts the installation process over :/
Then here I am! Thank you Rich. Although I think I may have some more issues but I guess I'd take that to another forum seeing as it's not still a BSOD.

Please let me know if I was unclear. If the other user wants to isntall windows from a different form of media the process will be a little different.

Ok I have another dumb question... I went to burn the 3 files to a dvd but they are way too big to fit. My USB stick is tiny, only 2 GB so that's not an option. Is there a way to burn the files using 2 blank discs or do I have to go out and buy a high capacity dvd+R DL disc to burn the windows installation files??

Its much better to have everything on one DVD, but the decision to buy will be up to you.
The possiblity exists that you will by the DVD and the procedure will not work.

So I bought a high capacity DVD and created a folder for the windows installation files then burned it to disc. Now I go to make the recovery disc and when I use the disc I just burned it says "the disc you selected doesn't contain a valid windows installation". Do I have to run the program before or after I burn it or something? Or did I just burn it wrong or?? Now what?

You download the ISO
Then you burn to CD
Set Computer to boot from the CD
