When I try to load a data dvd of a workshop manual it loads part way and then I recieve a message saying:- This installation path does not contain a directory or the directory is not empty.Any help in easy language will be appreciated.
To save a lot of time and trouble lets first see if its compatible with Vista. Then try other stuff.

I agree checking the Vista Compatibility Center comes first (if not compatible, that's that {though compatibility mode may still work} - but is it really likely the Vista Compatibility Center will include maintenance manuals for who knows what? I was merely anticipating that the program/manual would not be listed there and providing alternatives for if/when it couldn't be verified using that methodology. There's nothing wrong with providing alternatives in the event that the initial recommendation does not work - in fact, that's the whole point of providing options. I never suggested doing those things instead of or before what was initially recommended in the first post - I assumed that would be tried first.
Most of my suggestions are ways to either confirm compatibility some other way or find a way to overcome compatibility problems as I agree that is going to eventually prove to be the likely cause.

If its there or not, starting with the compatiiblity center is the BEST way to go.
