System Configuration Startup

You use msconfig for sartup or autoruns, and services.msc for services. Leave the services alone, and post a screenshot of your startup items. Search for snip in the start menu.

In a computer basics book I read one could improve pc performance by turning off programs and services that unnecssarily run at startup. It said to type msconfig, (which takes you to System Configuration), click the Services tab and Startup tab and deselect programs and services that don't need to run at startup.

After getting involved in this, I read in Vista Help and Support that System Configuration should be used to diagnose problems and not to turn off services and programs that aren't needed at Startup.

I've gotten different messages about what to do about configuring Startup.

Right. Our suggestions are just for diagnostics. If you find unchecking an item from startup produces a desirable result, you may want to remove that item permanently from startup.
