can't do a repair only have gateway recovery disk. at least that's what i've read - and there is no repair option (other than start up repair for which the recovery disk could find no problems) when i run the recovery disk So if I ever have complete failure i'll first try to using from the images made by easeus (only recently after sr problem started) and if that fails reinstall. Also have no idea when SR when south - the previous time i used it was over 2 years ago when there were problems with a program update. Just hate losing some of the programs for which I no longer have install files and company oob. Did learn a lesson. have new desktop with full win7 professional disk. Do frequent document and image backups to external hdd.

One other question, a friend of mine checked the registry and found that permission/ownership changes could not be made to the perflib/009 subkey. Read where other people have had problems with this but could not find any info that this would prevent SR from working. Do you have an idea if the two issues are related?

Since the only thing you have is a Recovery Disk, and i just checked your manual, and you have no recovery console that will allow you to do a default factory image install, you may just want to 1) just replace the notebook or 2) get yourself a OEM install disk from Gateway or just buy from Microsoft another Install disk .
You can only do so much with only having a recovery disk.

without going into details a the laptop wouldn't boot. tried to restore images from seagate goflex created by easeus. when easeus checked images found theyw ere corrupt. so i did a complete reinstall. the pain was downloading the 100+ updates for vista since sp2 and ms office 2003 since sp3 and related ms updates. SR now works.

Well it's unfortunate that it came down to that but sometimes it does. Sometimes windows is too corrupt to be repaired or to be repaired in a timely manner.

I know all too well the pain of reinstalling updates. One thing to know is that the service packs contain many of them so those should be done first. Good luck.

hi,

I have exactly the same problem as described by hackitoff (system restore doesn't work) with the one difference however that sfc/scannow does give error's (it always give errrors); the pc is working pretty good and fast but I would like to get this handy and useful system restore feature working again, it has worked good for sure. I do run from time to time Malwarebytes and Spybot or Sas and also a Windows optimizer (internet-, drive- and register traces cleaning) and the Updating is ok also (Windows is up to date). And I use MSE and Windows Firewall as protection. All seems to be ok, but system restore still gives the same by hackitoff mentioned final error message after doing its job, so there must be a problem for sure.
And yes, when I generate a windows diagnostic system report I get this frequently (but not always):
Report of 31/12/2011 (latest example)
Warning - Info: missing events in events logbook
+ Find out why 24% (5.619) events during the collection of data went lost. The settings fot ETW (event tracing for windows) max buffers and buffersize may be not optimized depending on which eventsets of data is being collected
ref: About Event Tracing (looks very technical!)
I wonder sometimes if this windows optimizing has something to do with this missing events and with the not working anymore system restore (it removes a lot of temp files surely)
I did not try out yet the hint of making a system restore from another admin user account in safe mode.

Hello, you may want to make your own Thread, as this user could not do all we wanted him to , due to fact he did not have an OEM or Vista install disk.

didn't want to hijack anything, just looking for a solution for this nasty and annoying S.R. problem and I made a new thread as asked.
