"unable to connect to virtual disk service"

Ok, booted from the Vista x64 install disk. Chose System restore, picked the October 4 date restore point which was when I installed SP2. Window pooped up saying it was restoring. Left it running for well over an hour. Decided to hit Shut Down. A screen flashed saying there was not enough memory to run System Restore.
My BIOS still shows 6gb of RAM and am able to access my two hard drives ok from the desktop Computer icon.

Also, right click on the desktop, choose Personalize, get error message, "Windows Explorer has stopped working"

Very strange :sarc::confused:.Seems everything OK but everything is wrong in your system.
In cmd.exe past below command

WMIC /output:"%userprofile%\Desktop\LOG.htm" path Win32_NtLogEvent WHERE "EventType="1"" GET Logfile, Message, SourceName, EventCode,Type, TimeGenerated /FORMAT:HTABLE:"sortby=LogFile"

this command create LOG.htm file on your desktop, pack it and attache to post, additional to that prepare log from VistaSysInfoTool http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html

(select all) ->this log also attache to post.

My Computer

I've just developed a similar problem. I run Vista Ultimate 32-bit and just recently found that I can no longer access Disk Management through Computer Management. I get "Unable to connect to Virtual Disk Service" as an error, and I've verified that the Virtual Disk Service is running. It's a very, very frustrating situation, and I'd really like to avoid having to reinstall Vista because it would take many days of effort getting everything reinstalled and configured. I find very little searching for this error, and Microsoft is, of course, completely silent on the problem. A search of this error message in the KB turns up nothing.
