No, I'm still crashing. It got better for a couple of hours, but back to random crashing. If it's hardware, what's the best way to tell which component?

1) Flash the BIOS

2) Buy a single 2GB stick of Corsair RAM

3) Try using integrated graphics if you motherboard has one instead of a dedicated card.

I tried flashing my BIOS once on my old Asus board and ended up killing it. I had to return it to the manufacturer... it's still in my basement.

I'll try taking out the video card to see if that's the issue, maybe this weekend.

In the meantime, here's my Startup list:

Window's defender
Window's window's operating system
Driverupdaterpro
Microsoft window's operating system
Download manager
ISUSPM - (what's this?)
EA Download manager
uTorrent
WMPNSCFG - (what's this?)
Symantec Security technologies
Adobe Acrobat
Groovemonitor utility
Samsung panelmgr
Mobileme
CTxfiHlp - (what's this?)
Quicktime
iTunes
Microsoft office onenote

Get rid of driver updater and massacre it in the control panel along with the donwload managers and samsung, itunes, and one note if you don't need it. WMPNSCFG is a sharing service. Kill it if you don't need it, the other is your sound card, isuspm is install manager so:

Window's defender keep
Window's window's operating system keep
Driverupdaterpro uninstall and kill
Microsoft window's operating system keep
Download manager kill
ISUSPM - (what's this?) keep
EA Download manager keep if you need it (unlikely)
uTorrent keep if you need it (unlikely)
WMPNSCFG - (what's this?) keep if you need it (unlikely)
Symantec Security technologies keep
Adobe Acrobat kill
Groovemonitor utility keep if you need it (unlikely)
Samsung panelmgr keep if you need it (unlikely)
Mobileme keep if you need it (unlikely)
CTxfiHlp - (what's this?) keep
Quicktime kill
iTunes keep if you need it (unlikely)
Microsoft office onenote keep if you need it (unlikely)

I think I found a solution to my problem.

I ran Everest Ultimate Edition (trial version) and found out which kind of board I have - Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L. I then updated all the drivers on the board and found that the manufacturer recommended an earlier different driver then what was installed according to the number sequence (either chipset, sound or Sata, I can't recall). I installed it, and ever since I haven't had any problems (6 hours of being on with no BSODs).

I think somehow I had installed an incorrect driver, probably through some driver updating utility. It's early, but I'm hoping this has fixed the issue.

/crossesfingers

At one point, my computer would not boot to the bios stage. The power would be on with nothing. If this doesn't fix the issue, I'm going to flash my board.

Didn't the right drivers come on a cd? Apparently, Windows 7 has better driver support.

I've had my computer for over a year now. The BSODs are a new thing, with them getting progressively worse over time.

I think the issue was an incorrect driver was installed from a driver updating utility. I installed what was on the www.Giga-byte.com site and it's working now.

Yes but older drivers should be on the cd and then you update from the website - right? :sarc:

any chance you can go to c:\windows\minidump, zip the dump files (*.dmp) and upload them to us so we can examine them?

I started crashing again and did some research online.

Vista has a check running in the background that looks for errors in your memory, and if it finds one you get a blue screen.

I cleaned out my computer (have a cat so had some cat hair) and reseated the ram and it's been working fine ever since. No crashes in 3 days now, I think the problem's solved.
