Do any of you know how to find out which websites I am getting this adware and tracking cookies from? I want to know where I am picking it all up. I'm talking about the usual stuff AVG and/or Spybot S and D pick up on scans (fastclick, doubleclick, BurstMedia, CoreMetrics, MediaPlex, and Zedo). I go to normal sites but I want to avoid the adware. I can delete history as well on my browser, but I can't figure out how to set it up so that it flags or warns of the cookies as they occur, or better yet, before I enter the site.

I use Google Chrome.

P.S. Why don't people protest or assault these companies that produce this stuff???

You will get tracking cookies from all/most sites, there is nothing harmful in them, just annoying, same with adware, you will pick this sort of junk up just by surfing the net, thats why it pays to keep anti-malware apps up to date.

thanks. But quick question. Why doesn't "clear browsing data" actually clear all the cookies? You are given the option box to clear cookies, among other things, but cookies are still there. Lots of them! Why is this? And how does it choose which ones to clear and which ones to keep on the computer?

P.S. just noticed my windows defender is not on. Should I turn it on? Or is AVG/Spybot enough? (and now, Malwarebytes scans on occasion).

Hi

I think this interesting article will answer a lot of questions and give some solutions.
Delete cookies

Regarding your antivirus. I would suggest that you download and use MSE. Microsoft Security Essentials, it will be an antivirus and take the place of Defender. You can use Malwarebytes (I do, too). If you want to keep your present set up. Spybot should take the place of defender.

Great article. Is that program a good idea? (Mil Shield)

I was able to download the other program (forgot its name, button just has the scotty dog on it-no desktop icon), but haven't used it much. Wasn't sure if I should delete everything, so I just deleted the cookies I knew I didn't want (from sites I briefly visited, etc..

Getting rid of "index.dat" files sounds like a good idea. But I'm afraid I don't know what I'm doing. Maybe I should stop where I'm at and move on to something else. I'm actually more concerned about the malware now that my clock moved around again.

My Computer

The first rule, no matter who is talking to you from this forum, if you do not understand or are uncomfortable do not do it.

You have win patrol, just like me. Take your time, learn the functions. The best part when something is downloaded the little dog barks and jumps to tell you. And then asks if you want the change.

Dont know anything about Mil Shield

Dont touch the index.dat files unlesss you are comfortable.

I don't understand WinPatrol. I tried to set it up so that I am warned each time something is added (cookies) but it recommends zero time between patrols then goes straight to the patrol setting! (from zero, which disables patrols, to one minute, two, three etc.) In Help it says to check the Monitor box, but this only goes straight to patrol setting. You can't set it as immediate. Only zero or one minute or more. But even in Help it says you can set it to immediate warnings. Ideally, I would want to block the changes before they even happen, unless I allow them. But immediate patrol is what I'm shooting for. Anyone??
