Whats the Best Antivirus/ Security Suite??

Fmjc001 -

Dude, thanks for the nice reply. Fact is you know nothing about me, or my knowledge of computers so by calling me a Noob you made yourself look like an ass. AVG works fine for me because I'm not trolling porn sites or shaddy back-alley websites that would require nuclear virus protection. I have a solid hardware firewall that does its job as well. AVG has currently worked for me so I recommended it.

I didnt call anyone anything. I said it is a nooby choice. And why are you going mad over me saying AVG is crap. Did you design it or something. Another thing, I do not troll porn sites nor any other sites that are teeming with virus'

And if you consider AVG a good AV I know excatly how good your computer skills are :)

Now chill out, I didnt mean to offend you

It works for you because it doesnt say theres a virus but im not detecting it.

Download avira or avast, do a full system scan then post back :)

And really, I was just pointing out that everyone who asks me for help with virus' have AVG. Its just not working for me, and no im not on porn or hacking sites.

Your welcome :), and OK so maybe you didn't have anything. However I recommend keeping avira and avast.

Although
2 Files cannot be scanned and were not scanning for rootkits...

See, now there we go. I will happily accept your RECOMMENDATION, although I may decide against it. We both have past experiences that we make decisions with. Either way, thanks for getting me off my ass to try Avast

If your looking for completely free software,

You should try Avast! Home Edition, it's easy to use and it's got real-time protection which means it's constantly protecting your computer from viruses and spyware trying to enter your computer at any time. So basically it's a anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit all at once. When it finds a virus, usually when you open a downloaded file or something it prevents you from opening it and gives you a choice to basically exterminate it from your computer or store it in a vault where it won't release the virus.

The Scan speed could be better, but if you set a thorough scan it usually cleans your computer from any viruses.

It doesn't take up much CPU and doesn't really affect performance, I'd had it reccommened to me by many gamers - along with software like Windows Firewall and you should be pretty safe, I've had no problems on the computers I've used for years using this combo.

You'll find many big-name security suites slow down performance on your computer and usually some free ones can out-do them anyway.

If you have multiple anti-viruses running at once, that usually minimizes your computer security, so I wouldn't reccommend doing so, just run one and a firewall and you should be good.

Here's the website directed at the Home Edition - you have to do a quick registration and you'll get a code sent to your e-mail where you can activate the installed program for like a year, and you can re-new it when it runs out.

FREE avast! antivirus 4.x Home Edition, anti-spyware & anti-rootkit for Windows

It never hurts to have some other scan-only spyware software because some can pick up what others cannot.

Hope it helps.

Then again, I have a CPU that can afford to have a single core spiking, as it has 3 other ones to deal with other stuff....

I used Avast for a long while and it worked very well, and it is free. How can you go wrong. The Firewall that comes with Vista also seems to work well and Spybot. I have McAfee now because it came with the computer for six months and a disk with firewall and spyware for continuing cost me $15.00 . It also works well. I have had problems installing Norton(actually it was deinstalling Norton to install the new one) so I don't like it anymore and it does slow the computer down too much.
I had a friend who did not use a program and a virus he picked up probably on line infected our work computer in Madagascar. We had a computer guru who fixed it but buddy had to reformat his computer when he was at home.

For all the folks saying that a product is "the best" can you please detail *why* you say that?

and just saying it uses low resources or you don't have a virus isn't enough - I can run around most days without any protection and as long as I am careful about it I can be virus and malware free....

If you say it uses low memory, in comparison to that? obviously I am not going to go as far as to ask for screen shots, because if you are now using a product because it performs better than another product, chances are you don't have the other product installed....so screenies would be rather hard to come by....

I currently use Eset Security Suite for anti virus and firewall and have no obvious problems. It is not resource intensive, does the job with minimal fuss. Just downloaded and installed PCTOOLS Spyware Doctor Beta 64bit for Malware protection and can say that at the moment it is working a treat. I see you can also download S/D with AV havn't tried that as I already have a AV running, but may be worth a shot. The current beta software is free.

I say eset(NOD32) is best because I have used just about everything out there(well probably not, its a big world.) And eset is the only one I've ever seen clean 30,000 infected folders and files and return the system to working fine.

Norton never did that.

And until another AV can pull that off I'm sticking with NOD32!

Xguntherc,

I did not care for Norton either and have found avast! to be as good or better, and the prices is right...free! Download the home version and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

My Computer

I noticed a couple of post ago that the Norton Removal Tool was mentioned.
I used it (twice once before and once after installing ErrorSmart) and it improved the performance of pccillin.
In-between uses I tried a 30 day free trial of ErrorSmart which was adviterised on the forum. It destroyed my performance causing explorer.exe to lock up the machine. I did a system recovery and then reran the Norton Removal Tool. Th manchine is close to normal.

However, I have lost my UNINSTALL program. Any clues on which one of these could have done that and how to recover. I did a file recovery on it and I did not recognize anything as it. Thanks in advance for any help.
