Which Antivirus is best for Vista .. ?

When running XP Pro it was suggested to me, by a learned friend, to avoid Norton at all costs because it slowed the pc down and took forever and a day to scan - so many files etc...

For years I have been using AVG Free, and continued to do so when I purchased my Vista Home Premium which, incidentally, came with Norton installed which I immediately took off - along with AOL!!

I do, however, believe strongly in Avast. The only negative side to the 'free' version is that you can't set a daily scan as you can with AVG.

Positive: Avast did spot a trojan - AVG didn't!

Hi a8880tt,

I would not use Norton on Vista at all. I have had to many reports of problems with it and Vista. Especially in Windows Mail. It's like a time bomb. You never know when it will cause a problem, but it almost always does.

never cost me £60 that and they said as its all new all the problems have been solved ??

i no what people mean about norton and win xp

Hi a880tt,

In windows vista you can use anti virus you want to. Make sure that when u use an antivirus. First of all create a restore point before you go for live updates. Because vista may consider some updates to be a bug. I have heard & troubleshot issues realated to many antivirus in windows vista.



PS: check if firewall of antivirus is creating an issue when you try to surf the internet.

ive disabled the back up and restore on the 360 because thats all it ever wanted to do
kept coming up saying back up now to be protected ??
should i enable it again or do you think it will be ok

In the past I've tried McAfee, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, ZoneAlarm, and others, but since using Nod32 I won't use anything else.

It scans are fast and thorough and it is light on resources.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7 and it runs great :cool: I had it before on my Windows xp and now on Vista 64, excellent antivirus.

I can tell you Norton AntiVirus is a piece of junk. It will quarantine, some of its own key files claiming there's a virus in them, when in fact they are clean, and then give you a message that you need to uninstall and reinstall the program, and end up deleting the clean files, when you uninstall and reinstall Norton AntiVirus. On top of this, when I tried it, decided it wasn't going to stay synced up with the Liveupdate server, even after having downloaded the latest updates. I had this happen to me, after trying it awhile back.

I won't use NOD32, it generated a false positive for spyware in the download manager for a music download service I subscribe to, and in fact there is no spyware in said download manager.

I actually got Windows Live OneCare 2.0 working decent on my computer, finally. It uses less resources than a lot of other internet security packages I have tried in the past.

well i use kaspersky antivirus 7, it works perfectly, but from yesterday suddenly its taking lots(45-65 mb) of resources sometime........may be beacuse i have chaged some of its file antivirus settings............bt i am happy with its performance, and for firewall i will go for agnitum outpostfirewall

I am new to this forum but not new to the ms newsgroups. My choice for vista is AVG Free. It is easy to configure, easy to use and picks up all viruses and trojans and the best part it works great on vista and it is totally free.

I have to agree with Brink and others... Avast has been great, and installs as a true 64-bit app. Windows defender has done it's job with Spyware. I've run Adaware and other scanners just to double-check Defender, and didn't find anything but cookies.
