why I can no-longer download anything to D:

That's OK.... I can see how this can be confusing.... it's bending my mind... lol. Yes, I'm trying to do what I always used to be able to do... download files or little utilities onto my D: because I have alot of room there (I make DVD backups) and even went so far as to creating a new partition.

Here is what I have: C: 69.9 GB (33.2 GB is free space)
D: 30.0 GB (23.4 GB is free space)
Those two have always been with me from the day I bought this computer (vista home basic- emachine) 2yrs ago.
Z: (I created this one) 23.4 GB (23.2 is free space)
E: is my CD-DVD burning area

You might ask yourself.... why doesn't he just put the utilities and such, on Z:?
I can but, I was just keeping things together and up came the problem.

Recap:

We got to the point of noticing, I do not only have (Creator Owner) as the user name or group, there is 3 other titles in there along with another one I created by trying to take ownership and give permissions. At the top of the list is "creator owner".... which had no permissions, but now does. In fact, everyone of them has permissions now. I noticed that none of them have special permissions though.....

I could not for the life of me, use the "take ownership" from the context menu because it would never come-up when I right clicked on the D:. I Started trying in the computer management area and went from there.... I was trying to see if it just wouldn't let me from there.... no dice. I followed the instructions from this forum on taking ownership and clicked on the "learn about access control and permissions" and " learn about taking ownership" in the properties window under the tab "security" for the D: drive. I think I have ownership.

Summary:

There is a few things we looked at before we got this far.... can't remember them all but can look back if need-be.
I want to remind you that during the shrinking of my Z: (just wanted t give back some more GB to the C: drive... The system froze-up). Had to abort by holding the power button in and had a mess on my hands afterwards. I think I asked it to "repair computer" (it was over a month ago now) and was so happy that everything seemed ok. I think, after that, is when I noticed the problems.... (the other I explained the day before).
I have now been checking event viewer for errors and have noticed a few not normally there... using the tool there... it sent me online and I keep getting sent to places I've never been, and can't make heads or tails of.... I start at ITT Sept. 13th for a associates degree in IT and networking, so maybe down the road, I can make heads or tails of the.... "whatever" .... lol

Thank you for the link to "Partition Wizard" I will give it a try in the near future. I have "Easeus Partition Master" but I always love to try new stuff....

I changed my D: to B: and of course, some things (programs on it) wouldn't work.... and some would, as they warn you about just before you do it but, that's nothing. I would be happy to figure this out. Anyway, that didn't work and got the same message: You do not have the rights (basically) to download here and must ask Admin. for permission. I switched it back to D:.

I had a idea and it worked.... I turned off UAC and tried to download Ccleaner for the heck of it to D:. "It worked" I'm not to crazy about working without UAC so I turned it back on and tried to download Ccleaner again.... same thing as before, it wouldn't let me. I don't know if this helps pin-point anything but, for what it's worth......

Yes that could help, UAC can stuff some things. I will need to do more searching and get back to you soon

I have never used UAC and have altered the registry to stop getting nag messages.
Having it on adds to the security of Internet Explorer but I don't use that either.
There is a program called Tweak UAC that some use to allow some of the features of it to be paused, or temporary turned off.
I think this was included with Windows7

simono,

One thing that you could try is to make a new administrator-type user account.

If you can download to D: drive okay in the new account,
migrate to the new account and delete the old one.

Yes an Administrator account might let you have UAC set to not prompt, but it will still be on in the background.
It is worth a try but you are just trying to restore the functions you already had.
Is your account an Administrator account?

I forgot to ask is your browser IE?

TweakUAC for Windows Vista and Windows 7
This is a link to Tweak-UAC download.
Still don't know why you are unable to move things from one partition to another, on the same drive, after giving permissions

(still looking though)

I'm going to start working on these one by one.... I really appreciate the help you-guys...
Yes.... I'm set as an administrator and I think I read in one of your post, You thought I couldn't move files from one partition to another on the same drive. To be honest, I should of tried that as a test... What I can't do is download a program or file or anything from Vista forum (free downloads) and anywhere else off the Internet, as I used to onto D:. I had to go and try what you were thinking (just moving them around) and found that I can do this with no problem.

Yea... IE is my browser... I know no-other... Maybe it's time for a change?

Sweet, Your problem is not as bad as I thought. I thought you were unable to move things between the partitions you made. If you want my advice switch to Firefox or Chrome. You can have more than one and it would be good to see if it was a computer problem or a Internet Explorer setting problem.

You may not have a problem with the partitions.
It may be an Internet Explorer security setting,I think they have a slide.
Can you try reducing the level of security you have set first.

Yea... I thought of that and checked it out. This is how I found them.
First one is Internet (set in the middle)
Second: Local Internet (set one notch below middle)
Third: Trusted Sites (set in the middle)
Last: Restricted Sites (set all the way to the top)

I have read quit a bit of the material suggested but can't find anything. I downloaded one of the tools and am have a hard time navigating around in it. It's the one to recover settings and what-not's but like I said.... I've got to figure it out.

I'm also thinking about trying Chrome after I'm done with all of this. Can't hurt. I also downloaded "Tweak UAC" and tried it (as suggested) in quiet mode, still... the same problem but, I have left it on my desktop so I can turn off UAC quicker, when I want to download something to D:.

I will continue on this quest and thank you for all you have replied with. If you think of anything else.... don't hesitate... :)
