can anyone help everytime i open internet explorer windows installer pops up then goes again , does anyone have any ideas i have run scans but found no problems

Try the following two procedures to see if they help identify and/or resolve the problem:

Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?

hi thanks for the help but they didnt sort it and even when i clicked on your links the windows installer popped up as well ,any more ideas guys ,cheers

I'm not surprised it came up when you clicked on the links, but clicking on the links wasn't the procedure. The links were to articles that described the procedures to folllow. You did do both of those procedures and neither of them worked - right?

If you did the procedures in the articles and they didn't work, try downloading, installing and running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility at: Download Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 2.5.0.1 Free - Remove Windows Installer configuration information on failed installs - Softpedia and see if that helps.

tried to download the installer software but comes up with a script error and wont install it

managed to install it now but dont no where it installed and its not running either

Check the Start Menu and see if Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is listed anywhere - it could be a separate entry or part of a folder. It may call itself something else (like just Cleanup Utility or something). Hopefully you will find it and there will be a shortcut icon to start and run the program.

If not, post back and I'll have to download it myself and see how to start it running - just installing it doesn't get it to run automatically.

I just installed it and it's in the Start Menu as Windows Install Clean up.

i have found it but when i run it it says it will make changes to lots of programs and not sure if i will get more problems if i run it , i was gonna do a restore but for some reason i cant find any restore points that go back further than a few days

Running the Cleanup Utility is your decision - if you elect not to do so, that's fine. We'll try to find some other answer.

There's a box on the restore page to check to show more than 5 days worth of restore points (at least I have that box). See if you do and that gives you more choices.

If that doesn't work, then I suggest you uninstall IE8 (assuming you're using IE8), download a fresh copy from the Microsoft site, and then re-install it to see if that resolves the problem.

where abouts the restore page u r on about

It's on the bottom left hand side. For some reason, it seems not all versions have this box (or maybe it only appears if there are restore points more than 5 days old - I'm not sure). If you're having this much trouble finding it, it isn't there and the only points you have are those that are listed.

Then I guess System Restore isn't an option if it doesn't go back far enough. Try replacing IE8 as described in a prior post to see if that helps. There may be something trying to install to it (an add-in or an update or something) that's causing the installer to appear and this should stop that if that's what's happening. If not, post back and we'll try something else.

Sorry to butt in. Please may I ask you to just check one thing for me?

Now, please navigate to C:\Windows, and right click on the Installer folder, and select Properties. Please tell me the size (not size on disk, though I will not be too fussy in this case), and the "contains:" line (it number of files and folders)

Try running a System File Check: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html. Attach the resulting .txt file to your next reply.

Try installing the most recent version of Windows Installer (if it lets you do it): Download details: Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable and make sure you get the right one for your version of Vista. Then reboot and see if that resolves the problem.

If SFC finds no integrity violations and you can't install the Installer upgrade or doing so doesn't solve the problem, you may want to reconsider the Cleanup Utility despite the warnings - but that's entirely your decision and your risk. I'm not trying to pressure you. We can keep trying other options in the meantime, but we are quickly running low. If SFC does find corruption, hold off until I've looked at the log you attach to your next reply.

Do you have a genuine Vista Installation Disk available (or can you borrow one from anyone)? It determines our next step.

First, please follow the tutorial that I gave the link for.

Once you have done that, go to C:\Windows, and scroll down to the Installer folder, but do not go into it.

Right click on that Installer folder, and then you should see those lines.
