Solved Windows update won't work

Hope you won't mind me bringing this thread to the top.

I have a similar problem described in previous threads- Windows Update won't work etc. It's been like that for a year. I've scoured the internet and seen /tried all sorts of possible solutions but none of them work. I don't have an installation disc otherwise I'd try a repair.

All of the observations in this thread and Mr Wonderful's thread also apply to my computer - SFC/scannow won't work, etc. Windows update error is 80080005. I've checked permissions for TrustedInstaller etc.

One observer suggested that Avast Antivirus is the culprit - mistakenly moving an operating file to the chest. I looked there and can see several system32 files including three versions of kernel32.dll. One of these was moved to the chest in November 2009 and coincides with when my updates stopped working.

Unlike many people I've enjoyed using Vista and haven't had any problems except this one. I'd really like to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

As suggested, here are my logs:

Try this
How do I reset Windows Update components?

If no success this may work
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

and finally here
Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

If none of these work
Go to search type cmd and then right click when it pop up
Then run as administrator
Then type sfc /scannow
Same as you have done, but 3 times. Try again see if it works.
Run three times. If it still does not work get us the log. The complete log

Thanks, but I've already tried all of those things many times (they are mentioned in the Mr Wonderful thread).

sfc/scannow doesn't work - it says Windows Resource Protection cannot start the repair service.

Windows SUR log is shown in my first post.

I've also checked all the permissions for TrustedInstaller etc as advised in other threads.

Nothing seems to work.

I've obtained a complete Vista installation disc and thought I'd do a repair, but it won't do a complete system repair - just a startup repair.

The rest of my Vista system works fine - fast and smooth - it's only the update service that won't function.

That is not the complete .cbs log. Read my post.

Hello!

Just as with Mr Wonderful, it is game up. Look at your registry log. Do you see how small it is? My one comes in at 8.25MB to give you an idea. We are talking about missing 10s of thousands of registry entries, just as MrWonderful was.

Look at your CheckSUR.log. It is showing you the same thing. You are missing huge branches of the registry.

There is nothing anybody anywhere can do to fix your machine. You can try a Repair Install, although I think this is too deep for that, even if you got it working. Unfortunately, clean install is about the only option at this point.

You have exactly the same issue as MrWonderful. I am sorry that I had to say this,

Richard

Thanks Richard.

It's not too much of a problem because my machine works perfectly *except* for Windows update. Strange how so many people seem to have the same problem as Mr Wonderful. Must have been caused by something common to all machines - a Windows update, anti-virus etc.

Rather than spend more time on this I think I'll do an upgrade to Windows 7.

Thanks for your help.

My Computer

You may have to do a Clean Install I think. You can try an upgrade, but I am not sure whether it will actually fix all of that damage. You can certainly try though. Good luck!
