Windows Updates Fail / Cannot update from IE8 to IE9 / Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Ran SFC scan a few times. I believe I receive message that not all errors can be fixed and I proceed to reboot as instructed.

I bought computer at big box store so I don't think I have Vista original install disk. I can look elsewhere for one and use the key code found somewhere on my HP computer.

I do have a disk I created earlier named "Vista 32 bit recovery disk". I rebooted with disk loaded but computer would not boot to it. I guess I have to go to BIOS setup and ask system to boot to CD drive first. Then see if I have the repair function available. I would rather not do this but may be unavoidable.

I think we covered the first two things.

Did you rerun the SFC scan, as I suggested?

I don't see any reason why you can't run the recovery disk if it's the one that came with your system.

Well, I have to balance need with risk. My system runs fine EXCEPT, cannot install Windows updates and I have to settle for IE8 which, I believe, is reponsible for less than satisfactory Internet performance.

I have a disk I created and labeled "Vista 32 bit recovery disk". I could force a boot to this disk, or I can attempt to borrow a Vista 32 bit install disk and use the "repair" function. I understand I may not need the product key for the disk itself as my product key may be labeled somewhere on my big box HP pavilion purchase.

I have one or two suggestions left to try of the 20 or so suggestions I have picked up from support sites and Microsoft.

The first time I tried "clean boot" I set it up incorrectly and did not have an Internet connection. Tried it again correctly and attempted to install IE9. No luck. Then tried to install just one selected "Windows Update" file. Vista update kb2808679.

Everything looked good. It did not fail when downloaded from "Windows Update" program. Rebooted and the configuration screen looked good. Did not have to backout update due to problems upon reboot.

Then when I went to Windows Update "update log", it showed that update "failed". Strange.
