Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Build 16489

Microsoft has begun testing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and intends to ship this release in the second quarter of 2009. Note that there are no new features in SP2; this is a more typical service pack that aggregates previously-released fixes. Here are some screenshots from the first external build of SP2, build 16489.

Have you set Vista not to shut down when it gives a BSOD? That way you can at least see the details of the error and possibly troubleshoot the cause, which in most cases is either hardware related or corruption.

Right-click Computer
Go to Properties
Advanced System Settings (OK the UAC prompt)
Startup & Recovery
Settings
Uncheck Automatically Restart

OK and the next time it should stay on your screen.

SP2 probably only brought something to a head that was about to happen anyway. Possible memory failure?

To be hones i ahve the same BSOD's evertime, one is for non_paged_fault (or summin similar)
And i have had another couple but can't remeber what they are.

Its now memory failure, i.e. my ram is fine, as it all runs perfect under windows 7, and before i installed the SP2, i used to have the same BSOD's but not as regular until now. There is no fix my vista install, it was doomed before i begun.

I also know its down to my version of Vista, as my freind installed his version of Vista (using my COA of course), and did not have a problem what so ever.

Nah, and plus the fact, windows 7 runs so much better and smoother.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that Luckystar. I've only seen BSOD once on Vista & that was because it had a reaction to me downloading the virus also known as the Flock browser. Firefox 3's problems were nothing compared to that. I honestly think that Vista is far more resilient than people give it credit for. Software sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. Most people think that Spybot S&D is the best anti-malware since sliced bread. It isn't a patch off MS Defender in my opinion & Spybot should be renamed Bugbot I think...

Well I'm glad to see something else finds S&D long outdated as far as that is concerned. But we'll save that one for another day! :D

As for the decision to dump Vista entirely that sounds like someone paying close attention to what is now seen with 7. Up until the RCs were out I did have a triple actually quad boot of the two betas along with XP and Vista. Poor XP didn't make it!

Once I found a way to get things running on the 64bit RC as well as the 32bit bye bye XP! Vista is still on but now seen in a slightly different form mainly the Virtual PC beta now seen for 7. When seeing a fresh of Vista there that saw both SPs go onto the new Virtual Vista without an issue.

Talk about installation time however for Vista's SP1 compared to SP2? SP2 crossed the finish line long before SP1 while that went on first!

You likely needed something now seen in the service pack to correct something else. When first seeing the SP2 beta go on no difference was noticed there. Then with the clean install of Vista seeing both SPs installed in consecutive order Vista still ran like a clean install of Windows.

I backed up everything, reinstalled my original Windows system, and installed SP2 right after. My computer is now fast as Hell. Fixed.

    I like chocolate milk!
Well when having any fresh clean install of Windows with or without any service packs or updates you are also starting off again with a brand new system registry without a long list of startup items! A fresh install "always" runs faster at first until you start loading it up again and then it slowly starts to bog down a bit as time goes along.
