i realize also with wow everytime i alt tab then tab up again it causes my fps to start really low and lag around a bit then slowly rises to 60 again. weird.

when you go into a game windows does things to increase performance (i.e. close explorer) usually you dont notice because of an intro movie or loading screen at the start of your game but when you alt tab windows starts doing things and it slows down.
