Eh. My Vista suddenly changed every single normal folder icon into the 'unknown filetype' icon, and I'd like to know if there's a way to change them all back instead of manually changing them one by one?

Hi Murska,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Did you install or change anything that you can remember before this happened?

For now, here are some options to consider to see if they can fix the icons:

1. You might try rebuilding the icon cache to see if that helps. This will show you how if needed.

2. Do a System Restore.

3. Run a Repair install.

WinZip have the right idea. you look and find it straight off.:geek:

Hi Alexanderd,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You will only be able to change file extension type icons by using some 3rd party program to it like Stardock Icon Packager.

A easy way of doing is to use a 3rd party ZIP program like 7-Zip instead. It'll change the icon to something that stands out better, plus it supports a lot more file formats (ex: RAR).

7-Zip

Hope this helps,
Shawn

7-Zip looks good but not what i wanted, it would change all the icons at once. can you suggest another program where i can change the one icon?

My Computer

Alexanderd,

You can only do this from within Vista if you create a shortcut from the ZIP file and change it's folder icon. Otherwise, it will be all ZIP folder icons changed or none.

Sorry, :(

just joined this forum, thanks to My Computer.
the problem is the icons "sticking" to two specific CDs. I put in:-
a)Photoshop installation CD in my DVD drive (E)
b)printer driver installation CD in my CD drive (F)
so after installing the photoshop and printer driver, i wanted to add in updates into the CD but turns out it's a mastered or something CD
after restart PC, then the icons for the CDs stuck there when the CDs are inside the drives even if I switch the CDs places; but if change to other CD, then no problem for the new CD, but if change back then problem again.
need help fixing it and i can't find the change icon button

Hi Zhang,

By default, the CD/DVD drive icon will change according to the icon used by the CD/DVD inserted into the drive. Some CD/DVD's will have their own icon while others do not and will just use the default icon Vista gives the CD/DVD drive. When you remove the CD/DVD, the the icon for the CD/DVD drive should return back to the default icon.

You can try Method Two in this tutorial to change the drive icon to whatever you like though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey,

In the My downloads shell folder, the icons appears to be a plain green/blue folder when I specifically changed it to the downloads icon that has the blue down arrow on it. When i single click on the folder, in the lower details paine, it shows the blue arrow, but it doesnt on that actual folder. I rebooted once and it still didnt fix, should I just wait after a few more reboots or is there a core problem that needs fixing?

Please Help,
Joronamo.

Hi Brink,

Im afraid this did more harm than good. My downloads folder was never yellow. It was green and blue but didnt have the blue down arrow like the downloads icon has. However if I click on the folder the lower pane appears and shows the proper blue arrow icon. I followed step one of the link you sent me. It made the user folder turn yellow so when i changed it back, it fixed on the desktop but stayed yellow in the start menu.

Joronamo.

Did you use the tutorial on the C:\Users\(user name)\Downloads folder and not the shortcut?

Ok,

What icon size are you using in Views to view the Download folder with? In Details, List, and Small view, the folder will not have the arrow. Only the larger sizes will show the arrrow.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey,

Yeah you are right, when I make the icons bigger the blue arrow appears. Is there a way to make it appear in the details view? Because I remember when I first installed vista, before I messed everything up. I could see the blue arrow in details view. Also, how do I sync my Windows Live contacts with the contacts folder in the personal folder.

Please help,
Joronamo.

I'm happy to hear that it works with the larger icon sizes for you.

Sorry, but by default the blue arrow will not show in those smaller icon view sizes. Unless you can find a custom icon that includes the smaller arrow in the smaller sizes packaged in it to change it with, there is no other way. :(

I do not know about the Windows Live contacts. You might post that question in the sub forum Windows Live in the Software forum to see what suggestion you may get.
