I take it this is why my PC had rebooted when I got up this morning, loosing all the graphics I was working on last night

.........with resultant 'graphical language to boot!'.

Sorry 'bout that Chief, but MS certainly handled this extremely well. I subscribe to Windows Live Alerts Service via Microsoft TwC Blog Centre, and they emailed two advance notifications of MS08-067, the first received 20 hours, the second 17 hours before the planned release of 10.00am Pacific Time, Thursday 24 October 2008, advising of the critical nature of this Out-of Base Security Patch.

I PM'd two 'Exhalted Venerable Sages' of this Forum forewarning them of the pending patch, just in case they hadn't picked up on it, and because I am apparently denied access to posting a new thread at Vista News.

One Exhalted Venerable Sage responded to my PM and advised that he would monitor the situation, and post a warning if necessary. The other EVS [who shall remain incognito and cryptically named] remained mute.

As a footnote, MS08-067 was released at the time stated above [3.00am on Friday 25 October 2008 in Queensland.......we don't need Daylight Saving, we have enough sunshine already. Besides, it fades the curtains and irritates the sprogs]...it was done, downloaded and installed and rebooted to my Notebook at 3.08am. No hitches, no problems, no subsequent quirks.

Sassofalco.

Re: Microsoft Critical Patch 958644 100% cpu in system process in ndis.sys thread

i had friday the same issue after installing the 958644 patch for vista enterprise x86 sp1. In proces explorer i saw system (pid 4) process on approx 100% cpu and within that the thread of the ndis.sys driver which is the cause of the 100% cpu of system process. When i rebooted the system with the nics all disabled then the problem is gone, when i checked off the file and printing services service in the nic properties then when i enable the nic everything is fine. When i check the file and printing services service in the nic which is enabled then i get the 100% cpu problem again in system process. When i uncheck the file and printing services in the nic then the problem stays also when i disable the nic again.
So when once enbaled the problem stays. I stopped al the services and processes except for csrss.exe (2x), wininit.exe and proces explorer.exe then i still have a problem (when i enabled file and printing services onces).... so it's a driver issue with ndis.sys (6.0.6001.18000=vista sp1 version) combined to netapi32.dll which was 6.0.6001.18000 and is now the version of 958644.
When any obne has any good ideas how to solve this let me now... the workaround is to disable file and printing services for the nic enabled.
My laptop is a dell latitude D620 with a broadcom nic.

with kind regards,
Bas Hendriks

Interesting. We have been seeing a similar problem on our Win Server 2008 box after installing that update on 24 Oct. Uninstalling seemed to help but then the server would still go to 100% CPU utilisation after hours of normal operation and it would be almost impossible to even log on and troubleshoot so required a hard reboot.

We reinstalled the KB958644 update today and then another "performance and reliability" update was picked up through automatic updates that was released on 26 Oct. I am wondering if this second update is a fix for the KB958644 problem:

Download details: Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB957200)

Just installed this second update so will see how we go now.

Hi Bas,

You should re-enable all the services you disabled because NDIS.sys and NetAPI32.dll are wrappers for your motherboard NIC manufacturer drivers...

That means the problem is caused by the current Dell NIC drivers your using, go update them form your motherboard manufacturer`s website or rollback the drivers to an earlier version (if available) to solve that problem ;)

I stopped al the services and processes except for csrss.exe (2x), wininit.exe and proces explorer.exe then i still have a problem (when i enabled file and printing services onces).... so it's a driver issue with ndis.sys (6.0.6001.18000=vista sp1 version) combined to netapi32.dll which was 6.0.6001.18000 and is now the version of 958644.

dmex,

thx for the update...the problem solved by itself....after a few reboots with file and printing services off and after i got an sms update within my company off this update the problem did not appear any more.
Wierd that the wrapper ndis.sys gave this cpu problem...
(the sms patch was the same as 08-067 and did not contain any driver updates...)

Jasonhill,

when i extract this update i see only xml files and cat files, but no netapi32.dll or ndis.sys updates.... so i do not think this will work... we can wait for the knowledge base article... maybe we are lucky.

with kind regards,
Bas
