The latest set of patches includes KB955428 to resolve a security issue on Works 8. The update fails to install.

The update is asking me to insert the CD containing WORKS8.MSI which I do not have - all the MS software came pre-installed (it's an Acer Aspire). I get an error code 8024002D

Any thoughts out there?

Prblem with Windows Update and Works 8

Hi can anybody help me, windows update did an update today and one is for Works 8, now this came preinstalled on my compaq desktop and they didn't include the disc for this program yet windows update says it needs to install an important update for it and when I let it install it says it needs this file C:\hp\tmp\src\MSWORKS\ so I click OK and it says The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to the folder containing the installation package 'Works8.MSI' in the box below. which has the C:\hp\tmp\src\MSWORKS\ name or asks to please insert Microsoft Works 8.0 disc which I don't have. I emailed HP(who make the COmpaq computer) but just wondered if anybody else on here had had this message.

You don't mention the KB # but is it by any chance KB955428? A lot of people have been having problems with it. I even opened a case file with Microsoft Support which I now have to close.

Try installing the update using this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=458985c3-9c6f-4049-81cd-0d0389c81f11&DisplayLang=en You'll have to right-click, go to Properties and unblock if you are using Vista with UAC. Unzip it to your desktop and double-click.
I don't know if there is a download option for your location.
I downloaded and installed "KB955428_en-US.cab", rebooted and in Vista, it is showing only in "Installed Updates" (not in "Update History").
In XP it just appeared in the list as usual.

Note: The installer gives the impression that nothing happened.....very annoying. You have to reboot to check whether or not it installed.

The link is valid and works for me, there's something amiss with your installation and/or settings in that case, or you are missing some updates. Make sure that Windows Update under settings is set to receive updates for everything using Microsoft Updates. It could also just be a website glitch, keep trying.

Unfortunately the file uploader for this forum wont let me upload the zip. Go here: Microsoft Download Center and then key in the search at the top for KB955428

Hi, ronjo, and welcome to the forums.

First of, *thanks! You made a distinction in your error as it should be, and yet still managed to find the exact error and post under - Bravo!

@both of you:

Now, for the good news - you do, in essence, have the exact same error - OEM aside, you both have pre-installed Works on your computer with no CD / DVD to reference when the error pops up.

Bad news - you may have to wait a coupe of days until M$ gets this sorted out - or, you could try manually installing that one patch from Download details: Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428) to see if that resolves the issue.

Brit - that link doesn't open in Firefox browsers - I got the same error.

Also, you cannot host files from M$ download. It is a violation of their policy.

@SimReaper- when asking questions about errors, you need to note errors numbers and what it applies to - as in this case, the KB# - then you won't be making duplicate topics on the same error.

Re: Prblem with Windows Update and Works 8

The link is broken :( it reports mhtml is not a registered protocol

Regarding that link not opening in Firefox. That seems to be a shortcoming in Firefox, reported since 1999 would you believe? (Well according to Wikipedia, that is the case).
Firefox
The web browser Mozilla Firefox, as of version 3.0.1, does not include direct support for saving or opening web pages as MHTML files. Though there is already source code available for viewing MHTML files within the Thunderbird project, this is filed as unsolved bug 18764 within the Firefox project since 1999.
There is an extension which adds MHTML support: UnMHT. This works in all versions of Firefox from 1.0 to the current one (as of 3.0.1). It is available under the MPL 1.1/GPL 2.0/LGPL 2.1 licence. The current version (v4.7.4) can write and open MHT files. It includes English and German locales. MHT files exported from MS Office (e.g. PowerPoint) are not supported.
For Firefox 1.5, this functionality can be obtained on Windows and Linux operating systems by installing a freely available third-party XPI file from Mozilla Archive Format extension, though the .mht files it generates are not fully compatible with Microsoft's products.

I just installed UnMHT and it does work for that original link.

using Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428)

Download KB955428_en-US.cab
save it then double click it to install
it doesn't show in view update history, but it does show in control panel - programs and features - installed updates
Updates then doesn't keep on trying to install it.

I hope this helps it worked for mehttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c3-9c6f-4049-81cd-0d0389c81f11&DisplayLang=en

Re: Prblem with Windows Update and Works 8

Thnaks Ex-Brit just tried your way and it is indeed now showing up as installed and am off to email Compaq to tell them so if anybody else asks them they can send them in this direction.

Thanks for your help :)

Debbie

Had same problem as Works8 came preinstalled on my HP media center pc. Went to Microsoft downloads, downloaded KB955428 cab extracted it and installed it. It shows in my installed updates and windows says that I am now up to date. But in history it shows that installation of KB955428 failed in two places, since I tried to install it twice from windows update. How do I take these references out of history?

You can't. That's history and like all history, it can't be altered. (Although many have tried...!)
