Vista - Problem with Updates...

Running Vista Home Premium 32bit on a Dell Inspiron bought in March 2008.
I installed SP1 but have not been able to install SP2.

SUMMARY OF MY ISSUE: I think I cannot update to SP2 because I don't have some (all?) prerequisite updates for installed. But when I try to update those listed under Windows Updates, some cause my PC to crash.

SOME DETAILS: The most troublesome (and annoying) issue I have lately is the laptop freezing for not apparent reason and I have to hard reboot. It happens at least once a day and occurs doing different tasks (on the web, working in Word or Excel...anything).

In an effort to try and fix things (and prepare to eventually install Windows 7), I checked Windows Updates and found there were 15. None of them were SP2. They were mostly security updates. On Sunday (Nov. 7) I installed updates by their date (thinking that earlier versions must be installed first) but not all at once. I had some from June and July and they installed just fine. Other updates made the PC crash (the blue screen, data dumping, etc). I ran the startup repair and after a couple of attempts, the PC reverted to an earlier period.

Now I'm back to having about 13 updates to install and none of them are for SP2. What can I do now? I have checked through a lot of the posts on this site and a lot of them seem relevant to my issue but none of them seem to address my issue specifically. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

Have you tried Installing SP2 By Downloading it Manually? SP2 Conatins all the Updates from SP1

Please See Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465) For More Information

Also Could you upload your Blue Screen Of Death MiniDumps we have BSOD debuggers to analyse your Dumps for you

Please see Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Forums For More Information

This works for Windows 7 as well as Windows Vista

Many Thanks,
Josh

SP2 contains the updates (except the most recent) that were sent since SP1. I do not think that is the reason that you cannot download SP2.
May I suggest that you try in Safe Mode with Networking.

I had about 15 updates on my PC last night and I managed to get about five of them installed. One of them caused a failure and I had to to the repair thing. When I went back to the list, the one that caused the error was still listed so I avoided it and installed some of the others.

I'm sorry I don't have the numbers of the updates. I'm posting this from work and the PC that I am having difficulty with is at home. I will try the TSD Killer mentioned by Flavius and let you know.

One other question: if I tried to UPDATE to Windows 7, would any of the issues I am having with these updates cause a problem updating to Windows 7? I think that it would but I'd like to know from the experts.

Thank you all for replying...

If you are able to boot from a DVD, you can load 7.

:mad::sa::mad::sa::mad::sa::mad::sa::mad::sa::mad::sa:
I'm sorry I haven't posted in quite a few days. I have been installing (or trying) to install the fifteen (15) updates over the past few days one at a time.

I have managed to install eight (8) of them without a crash or other system "malfunction". I have seven (7) updates that I can't install.

They are:
  • Security Update for Windows Vista (KB981957)
  • Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 System (KB2289158)
  • Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB2345035)
  • Security Update for Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (KB2413381)
  • Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2007 (KB2344993)
  • Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB2344875)
  • Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB2345043)
THE ISSUES:
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB981957)
After installation, PC reboots and I get the blue screen. PC restarts and I have to use the system restore options. I have to do this twice before everything goes back to "normal". I know that people will want me to send a screen shot of the blue screen and I will send this if necessary.

The Remaining Six (7) Updates (Various Security Updates)
None of them install. I get a notice saying the updates failed with a code of 80070641. I've done a search on the internet about this. Some websites have a four step process to investigate and fix this. I have not done all of the steps but I did check to make sure that Windows Installer has started and it is (though it stops...but I think this is what it is supposed to do?).

I'm almost at my "wits-end" with Vista and/or my Dell laptop. Part of me is simply impatient because I don't fully understand some of the steps that I have read about to fix these problems.

If someone could either carefully lay out what I can try to resolve these issues, I would appreciate it. I'm not a novice but some of the more esoteric "jargon" confuses me.

I AM considering what I would call my "Nuclear Option". This would be for me to reformat my C:\ drive and completely reinstall Vista. Is this too drastic? Would it accomplish anything?

Please let me know what I can do.

Thank you very much for any help/guidance/counseling anyone can provide...

Regards,
C. Connolly
