bad vista updates?

I have a Compaq Presario F500 laptop running Home Premium and have run into constant issues with it staying stable. I have run into the BSOD on multiple occasions and have had general lockups as well. The BSOD message I have received on more than occasion is Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. The hard drive and ram (2gb) have been replaced and tested with with no errors (ran hard drive test in bios and memtest86 for ram). I have had to run the recovery unit multiple times and at this point think it may be some bad updates that are causing the system to crash. Since I have had to use the recovery disc, I have over a hundred updates to install when Vista is fully restored. I am reading about updates here and there that should not be run, but wanted to get a full list of updates not to run if possible. If anyone thinks that I am off base or has some other suggestions I am all ears.

Thanks

Lets try to find the precise cause of the problem rather than guess about updates. Yes, some members have had problems with updates and I am sure that if the problem were Googled, we could find some updates that cause a problem. The updates, themselves are not the true problem however. The problem is due to a conflict between the update and something else. Lets try to find the something else and fix it. Every update is important.

The important report that I needed the mini dump was not there. Were the posting instructions followed as given or do you think there may be another reason?

Per Post 8, both options were checked off, but the dump is set to kernel memory dump rather than the small memory dump in Post 8. I have attached another BSOD report to see if this one is any better.

Hi,

Your system is not updated at all?

You need to run a windows update (Several) & get to the latest version of the system.
