I'll try to be succinct. I purchased an HP Pavilion dv3510 13" notebook yesterday from Best Buy. It came "Optimized" and although no one at BB could give me details other than "we remove the crap you don't need and clean up the registry" I purchased it any way.

After several "Windows Explorer not working" type displays which required 5 (I counted) hard resets in the first 3 hours, countless freezes, and several other issues I don't want to try to remember right now, I called HP and they recommended I reset the system to factory setting which they walked me through. I did this and then, since I paid $40 to "Optimize" my system and the idea of removing bloatware is appealing to me, I took it back to BestBuy to re "Optimize" it. When I got it back home nothing worked. So I returned it and got a brand new, untouched system. (Needless to say, as I read this I seem calm and collected. Yesterday I was ready to kill the first thing that came within reach)

I've had this comp for a day and a half, and I love it. I really like Vista, I like the size and it just makes me all warm and fuzzy... but...

Windows explorer keeps crapping out and when it does I can't access anything other than what was open on the desktop when it crashes and the computer won't shut down without another hard reset. I've done 3 or 4 already.

Also, this also happened with the computer I returned, I get the message "HID Data has stopped working" when I turn it on then the system tells me it will try to solve the issue, then says it can't and I have to hit "close"

So Vista Masters, what gives? Is this typical? How badly did I screw up my system with all my hard resets? What are some tips to avoid this (other than buy a Mac).

Thanks in advance,
Dean

Are you positive the last one they gave you wasn't "optimized" in some way by them again? If not, I would still take it back and make them give you one that works.

No, I checked the factory seal when I purchased it. I almost asked them to let me go in the back and pull it off the shelf. Boo on the Geek Squad!

Yeah, if it's brand new, I'd take it back. Happens again, maybe a different model might be worth considering.

Hi GratefulDean,

First, d/l this M$ patch and install it.

edit : 32bit version here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...90-1204-4F94-8EE1-063071797427&displaylang=en

64bit version here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CC-8D01-48AF-87B4-2F32D84344DE&displaylang=en

If it says not applicable, or you already have it, see if you have this program QlbCtrl.exe - type it into start search box

If so, stop that from starting up at all - type msconfig into start search box. Click the Startup tab, untick the HP Quick launch buttons program - click ok.

Or get another, as Airbot says.

Hope it helps

Try that first, and if you are still having problems, definitely consider a new model, and possibly even try getting a discount out of BB for your problems.

If none of the above work (as in you want the same model) then consider getting one from another place (such as Costco if they have it).

Thanks, I will try that first. I really do like this machine, I shopped for a while and it got great remarks on CNET and PCWorld.

Well it said it didn't apply to my system and I don't have QlbCtrl.exe in my system. I will start looking for a comparable 64 bit notebook at this price point. Any suggestions?

They ask that you make your own restore disk but the system can reload on the fly. I did that once myself with the first one. I will try your suggestion in the morning. I really don't want to return it, I really don't want a different one. The more I looked into the alternatives again the more I realized what a great system this should be. I'm going to chill out. As long as a couple hard resets didn't do any damage, and I can do a restore rather easily, I have 2 weeks to figure this out.

I just put in The Big Lebowski, running it in Windows Media Center, I feel better already.

I'll fill you in after I try your suggestion.

The Dude Abides,
Dean

Hi

Do you happen to have the Microsoft 5000 Bluetooth Mouse?

(HID Data means, Human Interface Device data...ie, mouse or keyboard.)

If so, there's the problem probably. It seems to have an issue with HP's own Quick Launch Buttons (not to be confused with the Quick Launch in taskbar)
Here's a fix if this is your case:
Go to C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Quick Launch Buttons and
move the following files to a backup folder on your computer:

HidActn.dll
Hiddata
PushHid.dll
Rename the files adding an extension of OLD (ex - HidActn.old) and add the changes into a text file in that folder for later reference if you want
Then restart you computer and you should not have the errors and the other things on your laptop should still be available.
Check HP for any updates to this problem sometime soon as they know about it and "hopefully" are doing something about it.

Aslo, many folks have gone to another mouse and their issues have stopped, many went to the Tragus bluetooth mouse and seems to work.

After running with this sysem for a few days I've come to a couple conclusions.

1) I need patience, although the 64 bit is fast, nothing is fast enough for me.
2) One should check the compatibility of ones software if one is running a 64bit OS.
3) No system is perfect.

I'm pretty sure my issues boil down to the Belkin Network USB Hub and it's soon-to-be archaic software. I'm not sure why I didn't pick this up before. Every time I "connected" my external HD via this gadget then hopped on explorer, whether to peruse the files on the connected hard drive or on the computer itself, it (Windows Exploder) froze, eventually shutting down leaving me with whatever programs I had open on my desktop and nothing else.

I was disappointed further when the folks at Belkin admitted to not knowing when their, apparently one-of-a-kind, gadget would be able to run on Vist x64.

The final crushing blow came when the folks at Western Digital emailed me to say that their network Hard Drives won't run on Vista x64 either.

So I am stuck moving my 750 G hard drive from one end of the house to the other everytime I want to sync my Zune (yes I seem to be a glutton for punishment) or back up my computer.

I will say this, although they never seem happy to hear from me, Belkin customer support is great. I have their N1Vision router and they have been accomodating while walking me through all my issues.

A final note, I last left this thread to watch The Big Lebowski on my dv3510nr. Well the movie stopped playing toward the end and the disc drive sounds like an Appache Helicopter. Fortunaty I did not get this to watch movies on.

Thanks,
Dean

I've had the same laptop for three months and I haven't had any trouble with it at all. I don't think its an HP thing. I don't think mine was "optimized" by BestBuy as it had crapware on it. Maybe that's the problem, the "optimization". Try using the recovery utility and restore it to the original state HP shipped it in. I've restored mine once because I did something stooopid...

Good idea. "Optimization" merely consists of bloatware being added. More so than what was there.

The funny thing is that when I asked the poor bastard at the Geek Squad what they did, exactly, to the registry he admitted he didn't know, it was all done via a program. I would have plyed further but there was a growing line of frustrated computer owners behind me and he seemed frazzled enough.

Also, I am suspicious that the first unit I picked up was a return and they "optimized" it to explain why the seal was broken. This is merely conjecture but I have the Vista serial and computer serial and plan to contact MS and HP to see if those had been registered prior to my purchasing it.

Oh, the unmolested unit ran better. I truly believe this.
