BSoD caused by multiple problems...

I finished my PC building project on January 31, 2009. It was designed to be a behemoth in performance and power. However, ever since its completion, I have been dogged by the BSoD. I have been looking at the minidumps and have been getting several causes. Some are caused by hardware (I don't know which for sure), and others have been caused by system files like win32k.sys, "Unknown Image", ntkrnlmp.exe, atikmdag.sys, ntfs.sys, and hidusb.sys. It seems to happen randomly, but most of the time, when one occurs, it is followed up in rapid succession of more BSoD's. My hardware setup is as follows.

Motherboard: Intel DX48BT2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770
RAM: 4GB (2GBx2) of OZC Technology 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM (Part number: OCZ3G16004GK)
Graphics: Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM.
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F1 series 1TB (Part Number: HD103UJ)
PSU: Powork Model 680W (680 Watts)
Fans: CPU Fan and 1 Case Fan
CD/DVD Drive: Hp DVD1140i
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit

The RAM manufacturer and the Hard Drive manufacturer have already offered to replace their products. I have decided to take up the offer from the RAM company because I want to return my 8GB of 1600Mhz RAM (I accidently bought 4GB extra that I can't use) and get it replaced with 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM (my motherboard will support 8GB only if it is at or under 1333Mhz. I doubt that the hard drive has gone bad because It was brand new when i got it. I thought that at first my problem was cooling since the Blue screens happened in rapid succession and would stop if I turned off the computer for a while. However, this evening I got another blue screen after the addition of a case fan. I have room for up to 5 fans on my case. I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me pinpoint the problem. I will include all of the minidumps. These are only part of the minidumps, since I have already tried wiping my hard drive clean and reinstalling windows.

EDIT: Added two more minidumps due to two new crashes.

EDIT 2: 2 more minidumps. Upon the second reboot, my computer told me that one of my usb devices was not recognized.

You mean the error report that it sends to microsoft, which then sends me back a very vague solution like a month later? Not working. I have also tried the memory diagnostic tool: no problems, chkdsk -r:nothing wrong, and a few others. I have updated my bios and drivers and I still get the problem.

EDIT: I would like to pose a new theory. Perhaps the fact that it will stop having repeated Blue Screens after I do a full shutdown and leave it to sit for a while is not because of the heat (the BIOS says that I am not exceeding 49 degrees Celsius) but instead because by leaving it off, even if for only a few seconds, the RAM has a chance to clear out. When windows automatically restarts, the RAM has no time to clear out the data that was left over from the previous boot. If this is true, the problem can most likely be traced to the RAM. Tell me what you guys think.

Yeah, I saw that. The remote service can probably be related to the fact that I am using Remote Desktop to access my computer from school. I used to use VNC, but it was just too much of a hassle.

I also noticed that Windows did not detect any antivirus program... No reliability issues other than Internet Explorer crashes alot (does that to me too)

EDIT: Aparently you are running Avast! but Security Center does not see it

Multiple devices are causing Startup degradation

You are not using a registry cleaner are you? Run a hijackthis scan:http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis

ps- since you are obviously downloading Torrents, and there is a problem with your Avast Antivirus I suggest you run scan here for Malware:http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

Backup while you still can, and do a destructive reformat/ and a clean re-install.
and do not use registry cleaners as they often cannot distinguish between unwanted and legitimate registry entries. They often do more harm than good, and corruption of the Windows file usually results in the need for re-installation.

Ok but I can't just stop using all of those programs. Those are very important to me. As for the antivirus program not being recognized, it often does that in the wake of a bad shutdown. Usually if I reboot, avast will start working again. What about my theory of the RAM being bad. I came to this conslusion because I noticed that after a complete shutdown and leaving it off for a while, and then turning it back on, the problems seem to go away for a while. I think this is because when windows crashes and instantly restarts, it doesn't have enough time to clear the RAM of all of the data from the previous boot. To me, this indicates that the problem lies in the RAM. I admit I am not an expert in this field. Does my theory have any merit?

According to the advanced troubleshooting scans there are no issues with your ram, but Vista does have a way to test it:


How to access Memory Diagnostic Tool from within Windows Vista

1. Go to Control Panel by Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel select "Classic View" then “Administrative Tools”

3. Select the Memory Diagnostic Tool from Administrative Tools

4. The Memory Diagnostic Tool will offer two options to select. You can choose immediate restart of your computer or schedule to run the memory diagnostic tool to run at next reboot.

Default Defrag in Vista does not defrag or even include in the fragmentation statistics anything over 64mb
you need to do it through command prompt (substitute your drive for the C: Drive) at least once a week.

Something else you can try is preventing these from running all the time. Do you really need them to start when you start your computer?

The problem lies in reliability. It will run like a cushioned dream for hours, but will then suddenly and inexplicably crash. Windows has told me that there is clearly a problem with the hardware, it just can't tell me which component. All of the other errors could just be symptoms of that one hardware problem. Right?

Two things it could be that would not show up in the diagnostics:

Motherboard issues
Power Supply issues


I have heard that Powork PSU's are to be avoided in high-end systems as they are a generic or strictly "low end" cheapie supply. (Not a good Idea for such high-end CPU/GPU's such as yours IMO)

+12v @ 24A, the dual-fan and single +12v rail probably means it is based on an old design. The low cost means it will lack protective circuitry to properly filter out brownout & spikes from the utility power to your pc or worse not live up to what it is rated for (very common with cheap PSUs), usually they are at 50% or less so a 350w load would probably be a more realistic continuous max wattage, and 680w rating for a *very* short peak interval.

Furthermore, external signs that PSU is of an outdated design are: A 5V rail rating higher than 35A, has a -5V rail in the specs and/or the 20/24pin connector has a white colored wire.
