Diploma in IT Networking??

has anybody here done it?
cause im considering doing it and am wondering if any one has any recomendations on it.

I'm in my final 4 weeks of doing this at college. Doing an IT Practitioner course in networking.

Not sure if it will be the same where you are, but my course covers Cisco CCNA 1 and 2 as well as various other networking modules, such as communication technology and network managment. Then there's a few other things that are included in my course such as IT technical support, Human Computer Interaction, Systems Analysis and the like. And I am able to go on, and I am going on to Computer Science at University if you want to go further as well.

My suggestion would be to start a uni degree instead - BSci majoring in computers or even BCompSci. You get a more meaningful qualification at the end, even if it is more work. In the meantime, you distinguish yourself a little in the interviewer's eyes when you tell them you're doing a full uni degree. "Diplomas" are a dime a dozen. Almost not worth the effort IMHO.

Fair enough. Whatever gets you into uni. In .au, the market is flooded with "community college" qualifications to the point where they're almost meaningless. I'm guessing the situation is not much different in .nz or anywhere else.

Investing effort into a uni degree sets you apart from the bazillions of other job applicants.

Well clearly it's different for you, as in England I need to do either stay an extra 2 years in school to do A Levels, or attend college and work for a diploma before I get in to University. The diploma is worth more when trying to get in to university as you cover a lot more than you'd normally in A levels, especially when doing computers. IT at an A Level is very business orientated and doesn't even touch on half of what I cover in a diploma.

But yea I enjoy the course. I'd recommend it over doing IT in school.

The Aussie school system is generally more akin to the US model - 12 years of school if you want to get into uni. "College" won't count for much unless you're already so old that they start giving special consideration to prior industry experience.

Personally, my advice to the OP was more focused on employment rather than how to get into uni. I didn't realise that was part of his plan.

My BSc in Applied Computer Science ( programmer) got me into computer tech and IT jobs.

I say 'applied computer science' because for a short while they had some goofy degree in Computer Science that was math proofs on how a computer program works.

Why do I say goofy ?

Because I encountered one of the Phd faculty who had one of those math proofs of computer programming degrees. He had no comprehension of a gwbasic program that opened a file on floppy, printed that data, then quit.

He asked me to explain this: Print "The data is:", variable

I am not joking. I am glad I didn't sign up for that waste of money.

My 4 year BS degree didn't help me get a career job. Got an A+ cert and I am currently half way through the Cisco Networking Academy CCNA program. The CCNA3 course starts next week for me... And it is kicking my butt!!!

I m about to finish my CCNA. Then i will go for CCNA wireless and then will move on to CCSP.
