how do you stop Vista just loading the generic PnP monitor driver

Can someone tell me how to stop Vista just loading the generic PnP monitor driver when I am trying to install an NEC monitor driver?

I have a vista business 32-bit laptop and i am trying to install a second NEC monitor but vista wont use the driver that comes with it, it keeps installing the generic one which wont work properly with the monitor.

have you tried just adding the colour profile from your drivers manually?

right click desktop and select personalise

select display settings

select advanced settings

the select colour management

then the colour management tab

click add

then browse to your colour profile

find it the select ADD

go back to the devices tab and highlight your newly added colour prfile (in ICC profiles) and select set as default prfile

then hit the advanced tab and under device prfile in the drop down list select the same prfile (if its not already selected) then just close all the windows

job done

dont worry about the generic monitor thing vista installs theres no way around it , its either that or a blank display and that makes it really hard to install anything

Thanks, have now got the NEC drivers installed, but i now have 2 further problems. I dont seem able to change the resolution in the Display settings from the max allowed for the laptop, and I have a constant flicker - as the external monitor is a LCD the refresh rate cannot be changed from 60hertz and i dont know how else to rectify this? Any ideas?

I am sorry for my ingnorance, but what is the difference and are you talking about the drivers for the screen or the graphics card:-

it is helps, the graphics cards is a Mobile Intel R 965 Express Chipset family.

im getting confused mate ha ha i didnt realise both threads were yours

i didnt realise you had onboard graphics im not familiar with the control panel for intel chips , with Nvidia you see you can set the res and frequency seperately for each monitor in the driver control panel (under the setup multiple displays tab)

as for intel i dont know ill see if i can find anything on the interweb

thank you. I have found the solution myself - I managed to force vista to use the NEC files, although that did not sort our the resolution issue - which again I have found the asnwer to - I deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/mobilepc/tmm/vidlist files - which has reset everything and i can now pick up the maximum resolution for the monitor. the next problem that has come up however is to do with the intel graphics - when i click on Advanced settings under the Display settings it comes up with "igfxrvc module has stopped working, which I think is to do with my intel graphics card - which i have just updated, but still comes up with this error....
Any help on this one would be fantastic...

its always more satisfying when you sort it yourself :D

that module is related to your graphics chip , have you tried reinstalling the drivers for it (uninstall old first then reboot)

if its the same drivers you should be ok , its good practice to uninstall first but just a precaution with graphics chips , you should be fine If you have any other unrelated gpu errors just uninstall then reinstall
