updated DVD drive firmware, now Vista cannot find drivers

Hi,

I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, it has a TS-L633C DVD-RW drive.

I updated the DVD drive firmware to a version available on Dell's website (original D300, current DW10).

Now every time Vista starts, the "found New Hardware" wizard opens and attempts to install drivers for the DVD drive (which it doesn't find).

The drive functions perfectly, it appears in "Computer", and I am certain there are no drivers that need to be updated.

How do I get Vista to stop nagging me to update the drivers ?

Thanks!

Hi Peter, I am sure that the firmware is intended for this drive.

It is a Samsung, but Dell-branded, so all support (firmware) is through Dell. I tried the Samsung FW, wouldn't flash, "incompatible".

The drive works if I could only get Vista to stop thinking the drivers need to be updated.:(

Thanks!

Well try this: Go to Device Manager, right-click the drive and update drivers and tell it to search your hard drive. Maybe it's suffering from temporary amnesia.:sarc:

I'm assuming you rebooted after doing the firmware update?

Hi panais,

The Roll Back driver button is grayed out, I attached a picture below, also of the driver properties.

Thanks,:D

Hi Peter, thanks. :)

Yes, the computer was rebooted after the firmware update.

If you let Vista try and find the driver automatically, either online, on the harddrive or using the Dell driver installation disk, it finds nothing.

I am convinced this is the case because there is no such thing.

In other words, Vista is asking for something it doesn't need, I just don't know why.:(

My Computer

OK, uninstalled the drive and restarted.

This series is what happens everytime Vista starts, attached.

I think Vista is fooled by the new firmware into thinking drivers are needed, they just aren't. There are none online, none on the hard drive, none on the Dell installation disk. This DVD drive has only firmware, no drivers.

I hope that helps a little...:o

Thanks gentlemen!:)

Thank you, Peter.

It occured to me to call Dell, this is my first "out of the box" computer in a while.

The support person reflashed the drive and got the same messages, looked for drivers and couldn't find them, then told me I would have to reload Vista, it was corrupted.

Thats what I'm doing right now (I am typing from the "oldie but goodie" rig).

Thanks for sticking with me, will keep you updated.

Well, that's bizarre. Of course Vista could have well been corrupted but I doubt flashing an optical drive with new firmware would do it. Had you experienced any previous issues?

I'm about to do battle with Dell Canada if the repair shop can't fix my Philips TV which I bought from Dell. It's been out of commission for 3 or the 5 months I've owned it. If it is unrepairable then Dell will have to replace it and I'm dreading contacting "Customer Service".

I wouldn't care but the darned TV had the best HDTV picture I've ever seen.

Anyway, enough of that, good luck with the reinstallation.

Hi Peter, thanks for writing back (and sticking with me).:D

The Dell rep. was looking on my hard drive for driver files left over from the installation (I had erased all of the "temp" directories). I don't know if that had anything to do with his diagnosis at all, but straight from the reinstallation of Vista, the drive stop complaining and looked normal in the device manager, proper driver installed and so on.

I still think the firmware flash did the damage, but I wouldn't know for sure. The Vista reinstall (so far) seems to be the solution.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck with your beautiful HDTV, I have a Panasonic 42" plasma I would sell you cheap if you didn't live so far away. I can relate to the beautiful picture, old CRT cannot compare.:D

Good luck with Dell service...

Thanks!
