I'm trying to convert some DVD files in Super but every time i go to browse for the files and i open the folder with the video files Rundll.exe crashes and then i can't convert the files. The same thing happens no matter what software i use to convert. I also installed an old program called Studio 9 that i thought might be the source of the problems but the program wont uninstall because it says "Uninstall wont work on this Operating System.

I remember RunDll.exe is a virus (but too a system file but they have different names, i don't remember exactly, i think the virus is Rundll.exe and the system file is rundll32.exe or 64 something like that, not sure about this), i had it on ALL my removable drivers (O_ò) and every time i opened them it crashed.
Do an AntiMalware scan with MalwareBytes or whatever anyspyware and antimalware you have on your pc (remember to update them)
Then post your results

Your right. SUPER also tends to crash with files it can't convert. Try Handbrake instead.

I did a full scan with both Avast Home Edition and Ad-Aware and nothing came up.

Hand break didn't work either it crashs with a rundll error.


This error also comes up when i open folders with some types of videos files, rundll will crash as soon as i open the folder and then like 5 seconds later explorer crashs.

I think it might be a codec problem too, i might be wrong but i think the problem started happening when i installed Studio 9 which is a pretty old video editing program and soon after installing it i found out its not supported by Vista, and i can't uninstall it because it says uninstall wont work on this OS. So i just manually deleted all the files.

Only a few types of video files cause rundll to crash and explorer to crash when viewed in a folder. But when i try to use any video file in video programs Rundll crash's.

Even shark007 who is a win 7 user doesn't recommend packs. If the files dont run and need an additional codec just install that one not the mega codec pack

I never installed a codec pack on my computer? How do i remove codecs?

Finally, add the best codec out there (IMHO). Download and install the standard version (uncheck the player option - you don't need that)
Download K-Lite Codec Pack
For Vista 64-bit fans, please install BOTH the standard AND the 64-bit version.

Rundll.exe is not a virus ,it just often hapends it gets infested

The simplest way to fix it , get the file form another pc that uses same operating system and replace it (windows/system32 folder)

Look for any codecs YOU might have added. If none, that's fine.
Then go to
Download K-Lite Codec Pack
and download/install the standard pack.
Uncheck the player unless you really want it (you'll see it during install).

Does it crash (blue screen followed by reboot) or just hand forcing you to reboot? You can un-install the video app there are 3rd party apps that w ill nuke anything, but. You might want to do a little investigating first. If you do get blue screens a dump file of what is going on is created in c:\winodws\minidump. Couold you check there and if there is a file with *.dmp as an extension, zip it and u pload it for us to debug.

If you are not getting blue screens but getting hangs there should be a log of it in event viewer (type event viewer in search) go to the windows log>application tab and look for anything with a red stop sign (indicates an error). If there are errors could you use the snipping tool to take a snapshot of the errors and upload them for us.

With these two things we can tell if the system which exists now can be salvaged, or if you should be doing a clean re-install.

As suggested by the name, rundll.exe ... runs DLLs. By itself, a DLL is simply a bunch of functions which are grouped together (in a single DLL binary) because they're somehow logically linked. What rundll.exe does is to invoke a particular function in a DLL outside of any other program (process). Example:

1) I create a DLL which has a bunch of functions, including MakeTheScreenSaverStart().

2) In order to invoke that function in my DLL, I instruct rundll.exe to load my DLL, find the location within the DLL where that function starts, and start execution at that point.

3) Should my mediocre coding cause a problem which leads to the rundll.exe instance crashing, the rest of the OS and other apps really don't care. That instance of the rundll process came into being only so that it could run my function.

What's possibly happening in your case is that you've installed something that registered a handler for those video files. Every time you go into a folder where that filetype is encountered, Explorer invokes the registered handler which in your case happens to want to run some DLL (within a rundll.exe instance). Deregistering the faulty handler would presumably fix things.

Try to associate the file type with another application. That may not be sufficient, but it's a start. The "proper" way to fix it is to analyse memory dump created during one of the rundll.exe crashes in order to figure out precisely which DLL and why.
