Vista x64 won't Boot Period:(

Hi folks. I have beed having problems with stability with my vista x64 system. After crashing several times from video driver problems (Nvidia 9800GT) Vista won't boot in any mode safe, restore to last known,etc. I put in the original disk I purchased and I get


Status: 0xc0000225

Info: An unexpected error has occured



I can not even get to the repair screen or even put on a clean install. The x32 disc will boot but has no x64 repair tools. What do I do?

Everything has been sweet until updating last week!

Hi Tetmatek, all i can suggest & has worked for me is to dissconnect your power sources battery as well if it is a laptop hold your power on button down for 10 seconds then leave it for half an hour & then reconnect your power press your on switch and hope for the best
If it does boot up you probably want to address the offending video driver problem as it is my guess this is the cause
(in my case i didnt & that is why i have a glorified doorstop that resembles a laptop)

Unplug the nVidia card. Then, set the BIOS to use onboard video graphics, should work. I can't advise you as to how to do that as some BIOS are different than others. But its pretty simple. Disabling the nVidia card and then booting should work. then download the latest driver.

I failed to mention I have a evga 780i FTW which has no onboard video. The latest Nvidia driver is what caused the crashing.

I have a spare Ati card i can install if you think that may help. What other choices do i have for drivers for the 2 nvidia cards?

Hi Tetmatek, I have to apologise to you as when i posted it was related to my own experience and research which was related to laptops (cant remove the graphics card) and never considered the big picture of desktops having removable cards

I do not have any experience with removable graphics cards but i am sure someone who has will jump on and give you some help

In the mean time if you could fill in your system specs in your user control panel (user cp) at top left of page it will assist whoever helps in making sound and faster support, again my apologies & all the best

When I had 2 WinXP computers, one would not work with nvidia video cards. I had tried two different model nvidia cards.

I changed to an ati card in that desktop, the video card worked just fine.

I made no other changes.

I realize your present desktop is Vista, but this might work.

Since you have a spare ati video card, swap out the nvidia card and try the ati video card.

Try the above post. If that doesn't work then I would have to suggest booting into safe mode with the ATi. If that doesn't work, well, I would suggest downloading ubuntu, burning it, copying all of your files to an external hard drive then reinstalling windows.

I finally got it to boot up last night after 3 hours of trying things. First I put in an extra vid card and that got things going a little further. One thing I noticed was in the bios when I was checking the boot order one of my hard drives was only showing capacity of 250 gigs and it was a 1terabyte drive. I fumbled with the SATA cables and it decided to be recognized properly then I was able to restore back to a previous point. Once it loaded up I shut it down and put the original video card back in and it is still stable. Tonight I will put the second card back and see if SLI will work.

Would a loose connection on a SATA cable cause the drive not to be recognized properly or would the video driver cause all these issues. Nvidia claims their driver to be certified but I am not going to install the latest one until I can be sure it won't crash again.

A loose cable could cause a computer to glitch, yes. I'm glad you got it sorted out, thats wonderful.

I don't see how, but I don't know everything, a video driver would affect the hard drive size being recognized.

As far as I know, drives are reconized by the max size the bios can handle. A loose or damaged SATA cable would have a definate affect as well.

So if your bios can recognize a 1 terabyte hard drive, then I would suspect the cable being loose or damaged in some way.
