My problems center on these two error messages:
- Event Log service is unavailable.
- Error 4201: the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider.
I have followed through and performed the the fixes suggested at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/110886-event-viewer-error-4201-a.html
And they work. But after running the PC for a day or so, on rebooting/restarting - !! the issue pops up again. I usually discover it when I am updating or installing or reinstalling something, such as in the most recent case iTunes. I get an update from Apple to download the latest version of iTUnes. I do, but the install fails due to access denied and permission errors, when iTunes installer tries to remove various parts of the old version. I fixed this by manually going in and taking ownership of that file or folder. And when that hasnt worked I've removed it manually. In one attempt to fix this issue I've even used the windows uninstaller to clean it out. And it worked.
This ownership and permissions thing gets complicated. I use itunes and on this new PC I installed (as a 2nd internal hard drive) a drive I used on my old XP PC that contained nothing but my music/itunes library. So that created ownership issues right from the start.
So..I guess the easy thing would be to do a restore. I've tried rolling back to a restore point. I tried that before doing any of the fixes suggested in http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/110886-event-viewer-error-4201-a.html But restore would always fail.
So any further suggestions? I'm the only user on this PC.
I know this centers on permissions and ownership.
