COMPLETED -File icon incorrect file association correct

Hello, hope this is the right place. But for some reason all my winrar archive started showing as a white piece of paper with the top right hand corner folded in, and in the middle the winrar archive icon shows. Ive never had a problem like this before and was wondering how do i fix this problem back up so it shows the winrar icon not with a white piece of paper behind it. Ive got AVG Antivurs Free version edition 9 and I've got malwarebytes anti malware, so i have no idea what could be causing the problem. I have attached a screenshot of what i mean. Note:I have already tried file association and associating it to a different file and then re associating it. Also have tried uninstalling winrar and then installing it again. Thank you Much appreciated Dazz

Click Start, Run, Regedit.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes and scroll down until you find RAR or WinRar (Not sure as I don't have it); whichever it is, it should show the (default) entry as RaR File (you could also use Find > RAR File).

It should also have a subkey of DefaultIcon. Click on this and it'll show the path where it gets the icon from. The last number in the path, after5 the comma, is the icon selected from that file. The normal path should be pointing to the Winrar.exe file, and the number something other than 0.

Export the key first, just in case you need to restore it, and change the number to 0. Should change the icon shown for Winrar archive to the main one.

If not, report back on anything that deviates from the above, including a screenshot of the registry keys.

@Ed,

Hello thanks for replying,
so i followed your instructions i went
to the registry and went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
But i couldnt be able to find the following ".rar." "RAR" "Winrar"
Couldnt find it, double checked and triple checked that i was
in the right place. Two pictures below showing that there seriously
isnt winrar or rar, unless i missed it. And i also did use Crtl + F and
search it. The only thing i could find was a "winrar.exe" but that was here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications
and when opening the sub folders for it, it had shell, open and command.
Thank you, and i hope you reply.

Hi Dazz,

Just downloaded WinRAR 3.93 evaluation and icons are fine and registry entries are present.

Simplest thing to do is install/reinstall latest version.

No idea why your icons might've changed.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi Dazz,

Sorry for the delay.

Is the version you installed the same as mine, 3.93?

Dazz,

I've installed WinRAR on my laptop and the keys in the attached file were created. Don't know why they're not on your machine.

As always, backup your registry first, see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/212412-registry-backup-restore.html?ltr=R.

Download the file and open it. The keys will be added to your registry (I'm assuming WinRAR is in the C:\Program Files\WinRAR folder; if not, you'll have to edit the file first).

Then, in Control Panel > Default Programs, change the association for .RAR to another program, and then back to WinRAR.

I'm playing it by ear here, so no guarantees...

Ed

If you have the 64-bit version, it should be installed in the Program Files folder, not Program Files (x86); the latter is for 32-bit programs.

I'm not sure that should make any difference, except performance, but you'll have to edit the .reg file to use it.

Open it in Notebook and change any entry of C:\Program Files\WinRAR to C:\Program Files (x86)\WinRAR; click save. Then double-click on it and the entries should be added to the registry.

Let us know what happens.

Hi Dazz,

Unfortunately, you didn't follow directions:

Open the WinRAR.reg file you downloaded in Notebook, then change all occurrences of:

C:\Program Files\WinRAR
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\WinRAR

Save the file, then double-click on it and it should replace the entries in the registry.

Then, go back to File Associations and change .rar to something else, then back to WinRAR.

Your icons should then be appearing correctly. You might have to restart your computer, but I don't think so.

WinRAR.REV and WinRAR.ZIP are referring to other file types handled by WinRAR; don't worry about them.

Open the WinRAR.reg file you downloaded in Notebook, then change all occurrences of:

C:\Program Files\WinRAR
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\WinRAR

Save the file, then double-click on it and it should replace the entries in the registry.

The old-fashioned way; by eyeball and editing.

In Notebook, for each entry that shows C:\Program Files\WinRAR change it by putting the cursor between the s and the \ and type " (x86)" (without the quotes); that's space-bar(x86).

Awww, the hell with it; just replace it with the attached file. :p

Then, follow the rest of my previous post.
